I am thinking about putting a Lowrance HDS 5 on my boat. Is that a good choice? If not, I would appreciate recommendations. What would you recommend for a lake chip, I fish MN and WI.

I think it's a good choice (I have an HDS unit in my own boat) although my opinion is both Lowrance and Humminbird make good units. The comparable HB is the 788c. Both are popular units.

For map card options, you're probably looking at LakeMaster or at Navionics Hotmaps Premium North. At this time HB units won't take LM cards but that is supposed to change in the next few months, and Nav cards work in both Lowrance and HB units.

The best way to choose a card is to figure out which lakes you want it for, and then look at the list of lakes available on each card. The Nav card will cover MN and WI, for LM there are separate cards for MN and WI.
