It sounds like Mercury has gotten the handle on the Verado's fuel economy. Can anyone advise on which model year that took place?

The 2005 L-6s were capable of burning the most fuel per hour of the L-6 Verado model years
I think the changeover occured around Oct. 2007. They changed the decals on the motor when this happened so it is easy to tell them apart.

Gen II Verado is what your describing - 2008 model year if I'm allowed to say model year when there isn't one.
That said, my 07 is a Gen 1 - updated to make use of some of the fuel saving changes, buy not able to be as much of an improvement as is possible on the Gen II's.
However, my 275 Verado has used less gas than my 115 carbed 2 stroke which I previously owned. I suppose the Verado would use more if I ran it wide open all the time, but I really don't run it full out very often at all.
Your driving habits make a bigger difference than anything else.
