Hello everyone, we are Laurentian University students (located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) and we are conducting research on a new product called "The B.E.R.D." (Boating Equipment Retrieval Device). The B.E.R.D. is a small flotation device that attaches to boating and/or fishing equipment to prevent loss in the water. It would attached and detach to most objects through the use of a clip. Should an object fall in the water, the device would release and come to the top of the water where the object lost could be retreived. The price in Canada would run at about $9-$10 and in the U.S. it would be approximately $6-$7. We would really appreciate any comments or opinions you may have regarding this product. Thank you for your time!

I'm sure some guys will find it useful to permanently attach one to their kicker motor..:-) Personally I can see where it would be useful but it would probably always be attached to the thing that didn't fall in. Sounds good though.

wasn't this post or one like it run early this winter, and it was then said someone already makes something like this? I know cabelas has a product called the rod saver, that does this.

That's a pretty good product you guys are talking about. The idea is great, but maybe a little too costly? I might buy one for my fish finder should anything happen to it but I couldn't see using it for anything else in my boat. Let me know when when I can get one of your berds - I might just check it out!

Absolutely. It seems that a 6 dollar add to a 100 to 300 dollar item is not all that spendy. About the same as sales tax...think about that for a minute. This product has to be something that is small and wont get in the way on a rod-reel set up, or trolling motor, and needs to have a stong enought retrieval line for the heavier stuff. Maybe different models? Sounds like a disolvable system like on the sospenders that triggers the inflation.???
You have a good direction here, but keep it affordable.

About 10 years ago it was possible to get one of these through Bass Pro or Cabela, you may want to find out why it was discontinued.

Before I can respond to your question, I require a lot more specifics. Good luck

I wish I would have had one when my trolling motor went into Lake Superior. It sounds like an ingenious idea, though. Maybe the manufacturers of some water related sports might be able to include it as part of the product at initial sale. Just a thought....

Yup, this was covered about 2 months ago. I think the students should do their research a little better. A product already exists...back to the drawing board.
