do you guys have one of those aluminum things that you put under your axle and drive ahead to lift the axle or do you just use a jack ?

No, I use a bottle jack. Could use the jack that came with the pickup also.

Rebs,
I have one of those things. I have used it in the past, and it works great.
I have not used it on the trailer I have now.
Because I haven't had a flat on the road.
I use a bottle jack or floor jack when working on the trailer in the barn.

I use a floor jack like this. However, resist the temptation to place the jack under the middle of the axle, and lift the whole rig at one time. Most axles have some "camber" to them, which may be a slight bend in the center, and you don't want to mess that up.

I picked up one of those things at a sale for a buck. Have not had a chance to use it yet, so I don't know how well it works.

I have one and it has been used twice but not on my flats. It worked just as advertised. Both were on tandem trailers with a Lund Baron and ProV 2025.

Look in Cabelas catalog. There is a pic and description there. I think they are around 30 bucks.

The one and only time I tred that thing, it kept sliding on the concrete and wouldn't pick the trailer up. I ended up doing what I have always done, using the jack from the truck.

That's the jack I keep in the boat. I use it for road side repair.
Has worked for that.
In the barn I use a bottle or floor jack.

Rebs,
I found one of the 1/4 circle aluminum jacks lying on the ground at an auto junk yard.

When I showed it to the fellow at the counter, he told me to take it and no charge.

I have used it to jack up the trailer and it works just fine.
Another nice thing about this jack, is that it has a very small foot print and stores in nearly any boat compartment.
I also use a multi socketed folding t-wrench to remove the lug bolts, which is also a very small foot print and makes for easy storage.

Good luck
