Triton Frontier with 60hp Merc 4 stroke or a Lund 1600 Explorer with 50hp Etec?

OK, so you're looking at these 2, right?

Although I have a Lund Explorer, I like the additional room that the Triton has in the drivers area, without the rear livewell as in the Lund. More room for your feet, as well as easier to spin-around to reach a transom TM.
Or, you could modify the Explorer like I did mine, and yank the rear livewell out of it.

ps: I started with a Merc 60 4S on mine, while I felt it was under-powered on my 1700, I "think" the Triton is quite a bit lighter.

You are scary HRG! Yes I am thinking those two.

HRG, Both boats are very similiar in weight. I am wondering if a 50 is enough for the Explorer since it is rated for a 60hp. The Triton is rated for a 60hp also.

take a look at this 50hp shootout that BWB/Trailer Boats did earlier this year, and compare the motors you're thinking about.

Looks like Evinrude Etec did not fare well.

Looks like Evinrude Etec did not fare well.
Hold on though. Although it would seem it was a fair outboard comparison, some of these rigs were setup way different. Did you take a look at how those outboards were propped? Merc has always known their props inside and out and come well prepared (and so it shows!). I don't know why Yamaha came to the test with aluminum props. And I really can't figure out who decided to put a 13 7/8x17 stainless on the Etec. Okay I know it was Bombadier who did this, but why I don't know.
I'm pretty sure the 13 7/8 x 17 stainless would be too much prop for my 16' Lund Rebel XL with F75 Yamaha. How a 50hp could hope to turn this is beyond me. I doubt they got to max RPM's with that Etec because they seem overpropped. I know the Etec has a lower gear ratio at 2.67 vs about 1.8 for the rest. That diameter seems huge to me.
Is it possible to test ride both of these boats before buying? I think the Lund Explorer is the better deal and would hold better resale for you. But I would want some assurance though that the 50 Etec was not underpowered. Also check out what prop he's running.

I would go with the Triton, I really don't like carpet in fishing/hunting boats.
Based on just appearances, it looks as if the Triton may have a bit more freeboard?

I have a 1990 alumacraft competitor with similar weight and have just repowered with a 60 etec tiller. I have the 17 pitch stainless prop and so far the speed is 31 mph on gps and rpm sits at 5750 wot . The load was 1/2 fuel approx 15 gallons and 2 men and gear . Another time with a little less weight and more wind rpm wot touched 6000 . So far up to about 4000 rpm the etec seems to lag then like a rubber band 4000 to 6000 your outa here .

Thanks for the input. I am still undecided but will be looking at one this weekend.
That Lund sure looks like a nice boat. That is a no brainer to me.

The Lund was very weathered, my 10 year old Warrior I sold was much cleaner. The search continues....
