What exactly are the purpose of anchor reins and why would I want/need them?

I've never seen them on any boats up here in Toronto but see them on many fishing boats, specifically Rangers across the US, so thought I'd ask.

They are a nifty toy for retracting/storing an anchor/dock line. You might see them on Rangers because these boats are often dressed up with anything and everything. I have never used/needed one.

I have one on the bow pad (where you mount the trolling motor, night lights) on my Tyee.
It is great for launching and landing the boat.

It is extremely convenient for those occasions when you need a rope quickly when docking, etc.

I will always have one.

P.S. I do not use it for anchoring..never have.

Thanks guys, kinda what I thought they were. So basically, they're a quick access to a rope for tie off. I thought maybe they served another purpose.

Have 'em on the front and back of my Ranger. Love them.
