Fuel Filter/Water Separator

I took my fuel filter/water separator off because the float us up a little and wanted to drain it. However, when I put it back together and squeze the primer ball it leaks? I followed what was stated in the book. Is there a trick to getting these to seal back up? I am thinking maybe the "O" ring is shot? ("03" 175 Yamaha HPDI)

Replace the O-ring and make sure it is not cross threaded and tight. Install a 10 micron in-line filter and you will not have to touch that one under the couling anymore. The one under the couling does not do a good job of filtering anyways and it does not seperate the water at all.

The book shows the "O" ring going over the filter cup at the top is this correct? I have tightened the heck out of it and still will not seal. I will try to obtain a new "O" ring. Also, it sounds like these things don't work. I won't fool with this again beleive me...!
