I am considering getting a couple rail mounted rod holders and would like to know if they have a tendency to spin on the rails. They look like they are just plastic. Do you need to put anything on the rail first? Are they strong enough or are they something to avoid. Thanks.

My favorite for rail mounts is the Fish-On rod holder with a rail mount adapter. It is plastic, and if you lean on it hard enough you can get it to spin on the rail, but it never slips accidentally.

If you are using them for trolling and especially if for dipseys, look at the metal clamp on holders. Lee's are the best. Perkos are fine if you aren't running 4+ days a week all season pulling big dipseys. These hold fine, but you may want to wrap a strip of the white athletic tape around the railing first.

On my previous boat I used the Fish-On rod holders on the rails with their rail mounting system and never had a problem, even pulling boards.
