Do all the hds units on the shelves have the latest software in them?
Should I wait until the first of the year?
Can you tell by the box when it was manufactured?

Very few if any of the HDS units on the shelves have the latest update, since it just came out this month. But software updates are easy to do, and we've done them for several customers who wanted help with them.

In my opinion there's no reason to wait. Whenever you buy a unit one of the first things you should do is check the software version to see if it needs to be updated.

I just did my update over last weekend. Took all of 20 minutes including download time. If you have an SD card and a reader on your home computer it's almost a no brainer. The HDS 7 did the update all by itself. You just put the SD card with the downloaded update into the HDS while its off. Power it up and it does the rest for you. I checked the software rev and everything was good to go.

I updated my HDS5 last Friday and spent the better part of Saturday morning trying to get it to work properly again. There are several problems with this update. My screen is now clutttered on a high sensitivity and on a low sensitivity cant even see a jig drop down! The most annoying thing about this update is that you have to readjust the panel sizes everytime you turn it on again!!!

If I could un-update my unit I would!!!!

Try doing the update again, I did the update and didn't have any problems. A couple of things I noticed though ........

1) It changed the way some of my overlay data displayed, so I spent a few minutes changing that back to the way I wanted it.

2) It reset the unit to the generic transducer. Go into the Installation menu and reselect the right transducer (probably HST-WSBL).
