I bought a StrikeMaster Electra Lazer about ten years ago.
Works fine. Not as fast as a gas auger. But it starts every time.

I run it off my fish finder battery. The battery is an motorcycle battery.
Have put in over 20 holes in eight(8) + inches of ice and it still had power.
If I were going ice fishing a lot and the ice was a lot thicker I may consider
a gas auger. But for me the Electra Lazer works fine.
I would think the new ones are even better.
One more thing, no noise and no fumes/gas, nice inside a shelter.

Last season we experimented with a 6" nils hand auger. We took the handle off & slipped on a 1 1/8" hole still on the arbor, then drove a 1/4" bolt thru the auger where the handle was attached. We then chucked it up in a 18v millwakee lithium battery drill. Fished 8 weeks in 12'' of ice with 2 batteries. We would get 40 holes on one battery. The ridgid drill also was good. The lithium batteries are not effected by temp. Later we also used a 8" nils & it worked fine in 12"-14" of ice, but maybe 25-30 holes on 1 battery. Good luck

Had a typo, to clear things up I meant to say 1 1/8" hole saw still on the arbor ( a dull one goes on better)

Ice gator power head is the way to go. It is the fastest and can drill tons of holes on a single charge.

I agree with the Ice Gator. I've never had one, but a number of guys who fish the North American Ice Fishing Circuit run them and they turn ice into swiss cheese.

Just saw the new design for this unit and it really looks like it is the ticket!! Have ordered one and am anxious to give it a try--will post updates as I use it!

The strike master lazer-most common unit around my parts so easiest to get parts. am going to start with the 8" but if it is too clumsy for me will go to the 6"

That'll chew through the ice real well. I've ran one with a 6" lazer hand auger bit and a nils 8", both were amazingly fast.
