Am looking at getting the Garmin Map 76 unit but someone told me they are coming out with the Map 76 S. Could anyone tell me what the difference would be and price diff? Thanks.
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap76s/ Should answer your question.
A lot more memory, a built in barometric altimeter, and a lot more money. I think I saw a price difference of something like $150 (which would put it in the $500 range). I believe the built-in memory would move up to 24 MB, from the 8 that is in the plain Map-76. Unless you use one for hiking and use topo maps when doing that I just can't immagine that it would be worth the money. For fishing I just can't see it at all. The plain 76Map holds all the charting a small boat could use in a day and the altimeter isn't of much use on a boat.

I agree with Thom. I have the 76 and 8mb of memory hold as much map data as you can use on any trip. However if you travel far and wide and not to the same areas all the time it would be a little more convenient to have all of the maps you need on hand and not have to change them by docking the 76 to your PC. A small matter and one I don't have problem with unless of course I take an impromptu fishing trip to a new area and forget to download the detailed maps.
I have the Map76 and haven't seen the Map76S yet either, but the barometric pressure altimeter might be useful for fishing if it can tell you when the pressure is rising or falling. Some people think that they can predict weather changes or fish movement from that info, I can't.
But the great thing about the Map76 is using the new Fishing Spots 4.0 from Map Source. It has several new lakes on it, including LOTW. I am looking forward to using it this summer.
