I have the Terrova 80 with Co pilot and would like to add the iPilot . I have two Co pilot unit remote controls. I'm not sure if I am going to like that BIG remote with the iPilot or the price . Will the normal CoPilot remote work with the iPolit, for the functions on it's pad? It's often helpful to allow somebody else to take the wheel in pinch. I can't see buying multiple iPilot remotes

The i-Pilot will override all co-pilot functions. Once installed, you'll be using the i-Pilot remote (or the corded Terrova pedal) to control the motor.

The remote, while larger than the little co-Pilot control, is not as big as you might think. The larger buttons give a nice solid feedback upon being pushed; they'll work great with gloves...no wondering whether or not a button was pushed.

Jason:

How do you mount the i-Pilot remote. For the co-pilot remote it was worn around the wrist. What do you do for the i-Pilot remote? Do you wear it around your neck? Can you still wear it around your wrist? Sometimes I am cranking in a fish while steering.

I only see one store that is selling it so far... for Dec. 2009.

What happens if I get distracted and I end up 150 miles from the airport, um er fishing hole?:smokin:

I don't worry about wearing it. I end up placing it down next to me when I am doing something that requires two hands.

I believe the unit will ship with a lanyard which you can place around your neck, if that's what you'd like to do.

Who is selling it?

We haven't put it on our website yet but we have taken orders from a few guys who want one as soon as they are available.

Jason, I would imagine that you don't "use" the new remote as much as you did with the copilot. I mounted my copilots on the back of each rod and used it constantly to control the boat. Given the features of the new i pilot it looks like I would not need constant contact with the remote.

Based on your experience, how much less do you use the new remote as compared with the co pilot?

Thanks for all the info!

I use it less. For example, when using Spot Lock, I don't use it at all except to engage spot lock. Then, I set it down and concentrate on bait presentation rather than boat control. That's the real strength of i-Pilot...it gives the angler the ability to focus on fishing, rather than constantly fidgeting with the trolling motor.

Think about all the stories we've all heard from the tournament trail, or even from your own experiences, of the angler in the back of the boat catching more (or larger) fish because he/she can focus on fishing, while the other angler gets the boat in the right position to do the job. With i-Pilot, both anglers benefit from full focus on bait presentation.

With track record and the playback functions, my use of the remote is limited as well....use the remote to engage a function, set it down, and then get back to fishing.

Cruise control....ditto. Set speed and forget about it. i-Pilot will take care of the rest.

About the only reason a guy would need to hand-hold the remote for long periods of time is to use the basic steering/prop power functions that you'd find in co-Pilot. Frankly, those don't really suit my style of fishing, so I've never felt handicapped by the i-Pilot remote. Rather, I feel liberated from constant boat control tasks and find myself catching more fish and being less exhausted after a long day with clients or friends.

Who is selling it?

Reeds Sporting Goods so far... They have an on-line site that is taking preorders...

I am hoping that others will follow suite shortly. I would like to purchase it from someone that I have done business with before.

A couple more questions about the IPilot. If you do a zig zag pattern during trolling will the IPilot duplicate the zig zag or does it just straight line it? For instance I will often zig zag to trigger a bite. Also does it remember the throttle settings? For instance I might full throttle it across a sunken island...

The short answers to your questions are:

Yes, i-Pilot remembers your zig-zag and follows it.

i-Pilot does not remember your speed when following a track. You can set than independently. i-Pilot can remember and maintain a GPS speed using the cruise control function, which is separate from the track record function.

I have a LOT of test data with screen captures and other information on my website. I've been asked by a WC moderator to not post a link to it anymore, but if you google my name, followed by outdoors, you'll get to my site. Click on "Humminbird Instructional Articles" and then click on "the i-Pilot has landed". Most, if not all, of your questions will get answered there.

Direct links to my site are also available on some of the other i-Pilot threads that are active in this forum.

I'm with Shamrock. I often liken the copilot to a 'hand control I never have to reach for', because the controls are always right there, on my wrist. Having to reach for a 'key fob' style control seems to me like it's going to be a pain in the neck.

I suppose I could find the foot pedal and use that, but I have never even plugged the foot pedal in to my Terrova.

Same here. I prefer the hand control. Speed up, slow down. Zig zag. I saw a boil move over there, etc. I fish for stripers and those fish move around.

For me I am going to try to get something that they use to hold IPods on the arm/wrist that I have seen them use at the gym. I might have to modify it, but I am somehow going to find a way to put the control on my wrist. If someone is smart they will make an aftermarket wrist holder for that purpose.

While I suspect that I will use the control less, I will always use it, and it needs to be handy for me to move to the bite, move out of the way of another boat, try something new.

When we ordered them we were told it would be in November. We still don't have a specific date.
