I go with a group that fishes in parts of Canada on a regular basis for the past 20 years. We've always had problems getting good maps. When we call the mapping companies, they say that Canadian govts. charge a bunch for mapping info (mapping done by the govt.) so it isn't cost effective to get good maps for their products....very little pay back on their investment.

Only recently have companies like Lakemaster and Navionics started to spend the bucks to do the mapping on their own. They appear to be starting with the most used (hence biggest sales of maps) lakes like Rainy Lake and LOW. Prior to that most maps were based on surveys done by state/nat governments. Here in MN, I get that info for free from state websites. I imagine thier cost were minimal.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but I guess what I am saying is that from what I've heard, the issue stems from policies on your side of the border. Maybe some else has more info.

You pretty much have it right, Vern. The problem is the licensing fees for the Canada lake maps- too few companies have been willing to pay them. When we go to Canada, we take a bundle of paper maps along.

After having several different mapping GPS units, even some of the early ones with not so good maps, I've come to really, really dislike paper maps.

I had one of my friends fishing with me in my boat up on Winnie this year. He doesn't run a GPS at all in his boat and his sonar is a few generations older. Usually he rides in his own boat so he really only sees the new stuff that we run when on shore. He watched very closely as I followed exact tracks, marked where the bites were, etc. He saw how the tracks were plotted on the 1 ft contour map, etc. and saw the how much better the sonar showed fish.

He said he could see how the new electronics really helped. I asked him if he would be buying the new stuff. He said he'd just follow us closer......
