Hi- I started out looking for a used 16 ft Lund. In my search, I found a 2006 Sylvan 1600 Sport Troller priced very well so I purchased it. 2 weeks later (today) I have found a 2001 Lund Rebel 1650 very well priced so I purchased it also. Now as you can imagine, I have to decide which one that I am going to keep before winding up in divorce court. I will be using a 2006 25 hp Mercury 4 stroke on whichever one that I keep. Any feedback on the boats or opinions on which boat is the better one to keep? Thanks for any help.

I have a 2004 1650 rebel tiller, so my answer is take the 2006 Sylvan and the 25 merc and sell them, and buy a 50 or 60 hp. merc. motor for your rebel, then you would have a good match. OR
Sell all three and buy a 2010 rebel, they have three different models and sizes that are awesome for the average fisherman, and if you take your time I bet you could come out of this with a new rebel with a little money to boot. GOOD LUCK.

I own a 2001 Rebel-V 1650 tiller with a Yamaha 40 4 stroke..so I can speak to it:
The 2001 Lund Rebel-V 1650 is a wider heavier boat with a deep vee configuration and a 50hp rating (60hp for the console model) and a hull gauge bottom thickness of .080"
....compared to the Sylvan Sport Troller, which somewhat lighter, a Semi vee hull (flat bottom) a narrower beam and transom width ,and a lower HP rating of only 40hp,and a hull bottom thickness of only .065" (according to their specs on their current ones).
The Sylvan Sport Troller may get by with the 25hp,many were sold that way. However, I assure you the Lund 1650 will not. I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 40hp on my tiller version,it's the perfect match of weight and power. Not so much HP that I cannot forward troll and backtroll, and still has plenty power to get on plane and up to speed pretty fast, even with a full load. Top is normally right about 30mph with an 11p prop. A 25hp on this just would not cut it.
You did not say what motor the Lund already had on it,but my guess is it's probably higher than 25hp. Assuming this to be the case, If you are considering keeping the Lund and switching the 25hp over to it simply because it's newer, that would probably be a mistake, for both boats. For the Lund because it's not enough, and the Sylvan in that you will probably hurt the resale, either by re-selling it with no motor,or an older motor.
In regards to a straight up comparison between the 2 boats,,(making an assumption that the Lund came to you in reasonable condition..etc) ..See my 1st paragraph, and judge for yourself. The conclusion I myself draw is your Sylvan is not half the boat your Lund is. Only thing better about the Sylvan is, I believe the livewell is bigger. Otherwise,no contest. The Sylvan Sport Troller is actually more comparable to the old Lund Rebel 1600. Though The Sylvan has a nice fishable interior setup,, underneath it all, it is no match to the Rebel-V 1650. The advantages of which will pay off when you start pounding it around in some heavier waves, heavy chop,(less hull flex, and a better ride)and banging it around on stumps, rocks and docks.

Thanks for the comments- I appreciatte them.
The Lund came w/ a 2001 9.9 hp 4 stroke Yamaha. The person that I bought it from mostly used it on a local lake w/ a 10 hp limit. It is in great shape. I cleaned the interior and the carpet and it looks like new. It has some minor dock rash- no dents or gouges. I will be having it repainted by a friend who paints cars.
The Sylvan is a very nice looking boat and the livewell is 10 inches larger. It is 4 inches longer than the Lund but is much narrower (5 inches). It does not feel as if it is as solid as the Lund and seems much lighter.
Maybe I should keep the Rebel, sell the Sylvan and both motors and then buy a 40 or 50 hp for the Rebel.
Thanks again.

Sounds like you have made the decision. You will have a great fishing machine with the Lund.

This sounds like the best decision,,but a NEW 40hp would be pretty steep investment for a 9 year old boat. You may want to start a search for a used or remanufactured 40HP-50HP,preferably about the same age as the Lund,,(not older). Would be about half the price. May not be the easiest to find, but considering we are at end of the season(for most of us) ,you have plenty time for next season. I believe there are several outlets around the country for used motors. Try a google search.
You did not mention if the Lund was tiller or console. If Tiller and you decide to shop for used,,,,going back to earlier years, the Yamahas had about the best tiller control setups. I think everyone has caught up now,but then, they were the best. Also be aware not all came standard with electric start or power trim,so may want to keep your eyes out for that also. Have fun.

Well if your boat is a tiller, I would go with a 50 h.p. if it is a console go with a 60 h.p. AND I would go with a new motor, you will never regret going with a new motor,
WHY take a chance on a used motor that could ruin a good day of fishing. or a week of fishing on a trip.
my 4-stroke Mercury is 5 years old now, and I fish a lot more than the average fisherman, and I have never had any trouble with my motor. just my opinion, L.R.

Good points, and all fine,,, IF..money is no object. He has to ultimately decide what he can spend. A new 50hp would probably cost at least about $6K ish by the time he is done. .... But I seem to recall that he DID NOT want to get divorced !
Used does not necessarily doom one to problems, and NEW does not guarantee reliability(especially now that some of this stuff is coming out of China). Having been boating for 30 years, and owning a variety of many brands both new and used, some of the best motors I have owned were bought used,(usually Mercs ). My now 9 year old Yamaha has been the best "new" one I have owned. (Worst ones I have owned new or used were OMCs ... that is ... pre BRP Johnson and Evinrude...stay away. )
