Last fall I posted about a leak on my trim/tilt unit, at the shaft seal. The only part avail. from Merc was a $263 piston/shaft asm.
I found out that a co-worker use to rebuild hyd. rams for construction equip. etc. He took it apart and went to a hyd. repair shop to match up all the seals and reassembled it, for only a few $$. So far it is working great!
The hardest part was getting the secondary piston off of the shaft. It must be assembled with permanent Loctite at the factory.
Hope this can save someone else a few $$.
