I currently trying to make some dressed trebles - I have size 3/0 treble hooks - some top quality buck hair in several different colours - some heavy thread and a top of the line fly tying vice, I still cannot make my trebles look as hairy as they look in stores - do I need to do something to the hair to make it bushy - do you tease it with a comb - my buck hair seems to just lay down against the hook - I have put three layers on some of the hooks and the hair still is not out covering the hook - can you make any suggestions???

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Maybe play with the quantity of hair you lay down at a time?Less hair at a time flares better, if that is the effect your after. Applying pressure when you wind the thread helps flare it out too. This probably doesn't help, but it's all I can think of.

Just thought maybe lighter thread might help too. Less of a bulky head, but too light and you'll be snapping it all the time.

Most of the Mepps are dyed Squirrel Hair. Get out on that front porch and act like a nut. Capt: Dan.

I doubt you have quality deer hair. Air inside the hollow deer hair is what will allow it to flare out. The best hair will come from the side of the tail closest to the back. Also a tail that is harvested in warmer weather will have less hair than one harvested in cold weather.

Use heavy thread and pull down tightly. Weave the thread through the hair (away from the eye) and build up some thread on the hook shank where hair cant lay down on hook shank. Don't know if that made sense; easier to do than to try and explain!

As giliigan said - before putting any hair on the hook, build a cone of thread on the hook, and put the hair on in layers on the cone. You will get a nice flare with the bucktail that way.

Basically - you need to put the hair on - in the direction that you want it to point -- if you put it tight to the hook, it will lay flat to the hook, if you cone out the hook, the hair, will flare out, in a pleasing fashion.
