View Full Version : Any Woman Lake ice yet ?
Gearing up for the annual X-mas to New Year icefishing trip to Woman Lake Minnesota (just SE of Leech).
Anybody know if they are starting to get any ice in the area yet ?
We are having a very mild fall into winter season here in Iowa; think that area of Mn will have ice by X-mas ?
Sometimes the ice has been a little "iffy" over the Holidays there, but we're gearing up and can't wait to go !!!!!!!!!

Some of the really small ponds and lakes are starting to have ice on them in the morning, but by evening most are ice free. Depending on weather, I think it will be at least 3 weeks before the bigger lakes are fishable by foot, and probably 6 weeks before you could drive a truck out on the ice. We have had an extremely mild fall here in northern MN. Usually can fish small lakes on foot by now. Not this year.

I just caught John Glesbie TV show and they were fishing on Leech in a boat for muskies last wee. They said water temp was 40 but the night time lows this week are to be around zero to 10 and highs in 20's. thats a big change from the highs of 40 to 50 we have had all Nov

The weather is finally turning!! By the end of the weekend most smaller lakes in the area should have a good coating of ice. As long as the cold sticks around, and it sounds like it's supposed to, it won't be long.

With our temps for the daytime highs in the mid-20s this week and lows in the single digit to teens, I would expect to see the lakes start freezing fairly fast. We have had water temps in the low 40's for several weeks. All depends on the wind and daytime temps. I would think by the holidays we will be fishing but on foot traffic only. Maybe ATV's on the smaller lakes.
On a side note I can remember back in the early 90's we were driving on the lakes on Thanksgiving weekend with 12" of good clear ice. Quit a change from this year. Fish safe!
Thanks for all the info guys !
Have been going to Woman Lake for a Christmas to New Years ice trip for several years now.
Nothing like a good cold Christmas eve out on the ice.
Clear sky, the stars out, safe ice, some good company, and willing fish......."Boy it don't get better than that!"
And yes, the good company includes the wife; D*** I'm a Lucky Guy !!!!!
Usually there is good ice at that time; also been there when it was only foot traffic and a spud bar every step.
I'm anxious to go!
Stay safe.
