Hello,

I've had the Legend for a few years now. I've used it for mostly for fishing, but some geocaching. For fishing I've used the "Hot Spots" map and have a good number of way points and trails. It's worked well for my needs.

I've purchased a Nuvi 255W that I thought would be just for car use. I was in a situation where I had to get one quick, with minimal dollars available at the moment, and no time to do much research. I bought a refurbished unit. Ffishman knows where. (Yes, my fingers are crossed.) The unit came with a car charger, and is pre-loaded with a North American map. No USB cord.

Now that I've had some time, I see there are "Lakemaster" fishing maps available for both the Legend and Nuvi.

So here are some questions:

#1 If I purchase a USB cord for the will I be able to load my existing fishing waypoints into the Nuvi?

#2 I use the serial cord that came with the Legend to load the Hot Spots maps. Will I be able to load the Hotspots maps into the Nuvi using a USB?

#3 The "Lakemaster" Maps can be purchased either as a CD type format for the Legend or a SD card format for the 255. If I went with the CD format, is there a way to download the maps to an SD card for use in the Nuvi? Or if I purchased the SD card is there a way to load the maps to the Legend? (Yeah, I had to read that a couple of times myself.)

#4 How long do the Nuvi batteries hold their charge and how long do they take to re-charge?

#5 Is there an external battery holding gadget that can be plugged into the Nuvi? My boat does not have an 'outlet.' where I can plug in the car charger.

#6 Will the USB re-charge the Nuvi?

I probably would have asked these questions if I had the chance. If it turns out the Nuvi doesn't work well for fishing, so be it. I'll be ready for next time.

Thanks,

Nimstug

Hello, Nimstug,
I'll answer some of your questions, but keep in mind, the definitive source for you is Garmin.
Both the Legend and Nuvi can display LakeMaster data. If your Legend takes a micro SD card, then you could buy the LakeMaster micro for the region you want. It comes with a full size SD adapter, so if your Nuvi takes a standard SD card, use the adapter. Some Nuvis take the micro, so you don't need the adapter.
If you buy the data in CD form, it will only recognize one gps for downloading data. You may be able to buy an additional unlock code for a 2nd gps from Garmin, but if not you would have to get a second CD.
If you buy the micro SD, you can put it into as many Garmin gps's as you want, presuming they are compatible.

Thanks Moc,

The Legend does not have a slot for a SD card. The nuvi uses a standard size SD card.

Right now I'm thinking I'll copy my questions and see if I can e-mail them to Garmin. Your "hint" about Garmin being the final word is well taken.

Thank you for helping.
