I am picking up a Humminbird 718 and would like some feedback on the external GR 50 or GR 16 GPS antenna. How well does it work? Is it reliable? Any problems with set up?

The Humminbird antennas a great, just plug them in and go. They lock on and stay that way. I even know guys that mount them inside compartments with non metal lids and they work fine. No separate power leads to hook up like on some Lowrance systems. I have a 2006 787c2 and 2007 997 with not a single issue. If you do have a problem, replacements after warranty are only $99 compared to over $200 for competitors antennas.
