I got a question on this, I don't know. I bought my boat rigged from the dealer and have not drilled into the transom. Is there wood under the metal on the transom? I am guessing yes.

Thanks in advance for the answer.

There is wood sandwiched in my 2006 1700 Explorer, but it does not run all the way down to the keel. It basically stops just below the lower motor mounting bolts, so it does not absorb any water in the bilge area unless it got 6-8" deep.

Yes... but not all the way to the bottom, as HRG mentioned.
You can tell how far down the wood goes by the thickness of the transom.
