I finally got the chance to take my new to me 2009 Ranger 620 out for the first time yesterday! All I can say is WOW!!! The guy told me I bought it from that he was getting between 68 to 69 mph out of it. I did not believe that of course but I see where he wasn't lying! The speedometer was saying 69 mph but the gps said 63. I was hoping it would do 52 to 55 but it cruises at 50 like nothing! It has a Evinrude 250 ho with a jackplate which I know nothing about, 4 bladed prop. Can someone please explain the jackplate to me and what it's purpose is? What is the most rpms I should run that motor at? When i had it topped out I was running right at 6000 rpms! Hole shot was outstanding as well! Over all I really couldn't believe how it handles and takes waves and never got a drop of water on me or even on the windshield! I'm Sold! I might add that i was tin boat owner before this and loved it. But not even in the ballpark with this boat!

Congratulaions on the new boat. Need to bring it to Wilson Lake this winter...not catching many fish but catching big fish which is strange for Wilson Lake.

Congrats that sounds like an amazing rig. I run an atlas plate on my rig. Is your jackplate hydraulic or manual? the jack plate has two main functions the offset (distance added between the transom and the motor) this benefits you by moving the motor farther back from the turbulent water coming off the pad of your transom allowing your prop to run in "cleaner water" or water with less air in it so your prop is more efficient and has better bite. Being able to raise your motor help on the top end, for every inch of lower unit below the pad of your boat equals 1000 lbs of drag so the more you can raise the motor while still having the prop hold the less drag, the more speed. If yours is hydraulic you get the best of all worlds you can lower it in rough water and for hole shots and raise it once on plane and running wide open and its nice in shallow water areas as well. Have fun with it!!!!

Yes it is hydralic and i played with it while at the lake, I was very pleased with the top end but not sure if what rpms i should not exceed! Is 6000 to much? I think 63mph gps is pretty darn good what do u think? Thanks Jim

Read your outboard owners manual for Max. RPM......

Log on to www.etecownersgroup.com for engine specs. if you don't have a manual.
It's your money & your rig so do as you wish but I would be asking about max rpm BEFORE hitting wot.
While you're playing around with your jack plate you might wanna keep a close eye on your water pressure.

6,000 is too high, you want to be between 5600 and 5800 at WOT.
63 gps is good - about what I've seen from that righ with that motor. But, I've yet to catch a fish with mine (619 with 225HO) at WOT. :)
Enjoy!

you said you were running a 4 blade prop, what pitch is it?

I was afraid someone would ask me that and I haven't checked it and the boat is about 5 milse from me so I can't check it right now but I will!

If you are running over the suggested RPM level already you have a couple options, you can purchase a new prop and go up in pitch as long as your hole shot is real good the extra pitch shouldn't effect your a hole shot alot. But what I would suggest is giving Jon at DAH propeller a call or Mark Croxton props a call both are very good performance prop guys and thats what you want, not just a guy who can sell you a new prop or patch yours back together. They can take your prop and blue print it to best perform on your rig specifically, they can add more cup (which will help it hold at high jackplate heights) and increase the pitch as well. Since you have RPMS to spare you should be able to see more than the typical 1 to 3 mph increase that guys get from a quality blue print without the plate. DAH did my current prop and I was able to raise my motor all the way up without blowout talk about hold on. You can really make your rig fly for very little coin $250 to $300 to rework your prop....best money you will spend besides the boat you bought LOL

I am guessing Cyclone 21.:popc1: I would check with Evinrude on max rpms for that motor.

I went out today to look at the prop and for the life of me I could not see any numbers anywhere on it but it is a 4 plade with a yellow turbo on it! I have the original 3 blade that came with it but didn't look for numbers on it. so I guess I don't know what prop is on it! I did look at my manual and it says that full throtle range is 4500 to 6000 for this motor! Thanks Jim

Have you tried the three blade? they tend to be a little faster top end.
