As you look at the rod holders that are on display in fishing shops, sporting goods stores and other retail stores - is there any design that seems to make sense for use at home?

I have seen the oak display cases at Cabellas and Bass pro shop,
I have seen the holders, that are basically hooks, to which is hooked an eye. I have seen the mount on the wall - horizontal and vertical rod holders -- all of which will do their job.

I have just recently built a few rod holders for use in the house or garage or cabin - by simply drilling holes in 2X lumber stock - round, square, or rectangular - and inserting the correctly sized PVC pipe - cut to about 4-7 inches - depending on the length of the back grip of the rod. A typical rod holder uses about $2 in materials and about 30 minutes of construction time - including the finishing.

I am just wondering if there are better ideas out there for a "nice looking rod holder" to display - those "matched rod and reel combos"?

Take care

I just built a set of rod holders into the side of my garage. They work great but are probably not for your application. However I was so proud of myself that here are some instructions anyway and you may be able to adapt them to many situations. Many garages have 2X4 stud walls. In between these studs you can make a decent rod holder for basically free. Cut a piece of 2X4 or 1X6 or what ever you have laying around so that it fits between the studs. 14 1/2 inches or so depending on how careful the carpenter was who built the garage in the first place. It should be slid in at the floor level and set at about a 45 degree angle. I didn't measure, I moved it around until it worked and screwed it to the footboard at the base of the wall. About 4 or 5 inches above this on the inside of the studs screw a 1X2, or stair rail dowel. I used an old broken rake handle drilled holes and screwed it on to the studs horizontally. It looks alot like one of the display racks that you mentioned and holds the rods in a similiar manner by placing pressure against an angled board. About 4 or 5 feet up the wall you will want to place a clip or pad to seperate the rods. About 4 or 5 rods will fit inbetween each set of studs so of course you will need several to hold all your gear. It works great and because its recessed already takes up less space and hides the rod tips a little bit. I hope this helps someone.

For the garage, I used 1/2 inch conduit secured with 1/2 inch pipe straps across the bottom of the trusses. I have storage strusses so they have 2x10's on the bottom. I just spaced 2 of them about 4 foot apart above my boat. When I want certain rods I just get in the boat and reach up and take whatever rods I need and put the others back up. I also hang my downriggers there, nets, etc. It is a great way to use this space and saves the rest of the garage for less important items. I also hung a shelf down over the motor area for tackleboxes and other goodies.

REW, your question got me thinking about what a nice display rack might look like. I have never tried this, so it might not work, but what about the racks people buy/make to store pool cues vertically. I've got a pool table and one of these racks in my basement - so long as the eyes fit through the top hole, it should work. I'm gonna look when I get home.

If the sizing is not right, that type of design, with a little wider spacing and bigger top holes should do it.

These can be purchased at any games-type store, or it should not be too hard to replicate their pattern just by eyeballing them.

What do you think?
