I have heard many rumors about border crossings since 9/11. Is it true that a previous DWI conviction will hurt your chances in crossing the border? What's the scoop?

Yes that is true. They don't ask everytime, but if they do check your record they can and will send your home. My best fishing buddy was turned around in January. He had a DWI in 1990. He has to apply for a Ministers Permit for people with minor criminality. He has since found out that they can issue the permit at the border, but he has to provide all sorts of documentation. Contact the Immigration Office at Canadian Customs for details. Permit cost about $150 US

You could get fine and or thrown in jail if you go across even if they don't ask you. It is real hard to get the permit. I would call the customs and find out the information for myself if I were you. GOOD LUCK!
