Ice! After what seemed like an unusually long wait, the ice fishing season has begun on Mille Lacs. Cove, Wahkon, Isle and Mac's each have some good "starter ice" on them and folks have been walking out to some of their early-ice hot spots. 3-5 inches of ice is common with a few spots showing 6+. Expect to see an assortment of portables and even a few light permanent houses over the weekend. There is some ice on the main lake, but there are some open patches too. Be sure to check the ice YOURSELF as you make your first few treks out on the ice.
The bite has been mostly perch and northern so far. Look to 12 feet or less for your best action. Fatheads or waxies on a small willow spoon work best.
The weather for the weekend (according to the National Weather Service) looks like this:
Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 9. Wind chill values between -11 and -21. West southwest wind between 6 and 10 mph.
Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -1. Wind chill values between -4 and -9. Southwest wind at 5 mph becoming southeast.
Saturday: A 10 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 14. South southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 13.
The new moon is 12-16-09.
