Try running a search on this topic and include the archives. This has been discussed lots of times. Here's my two cents:

Most will tell you the Diawa SG series is the best. Size 27s are around $90 - $95.

The Okuma's are a decent reel "for the buck." The 20DX run around $55 to $60. Okuma has come out with a new linecounter this year, the "Convector" series that MAY give the Diawa's a run for their money. The size 20 Convectors run $70-$75. I am planning to try two of the Convectors for the first time on Friday.

Most people I know that have gone down the road of the Shakespear, Mitchell or the other cheaper ones end up replacing them with either the Diawas or Okumas.

Good Luck,
Steve

Remember the old auto repair advertizment..pay me now or pay me later?? Buy the 27 Diawas now or you will be buying them later.

6 items that I wish I had my money back from are the 6 Okumas I own, would make a nice downpayment to get the Diawas.

Had the same question...Looked really hard at the new Okuma Convectors
This is the third time they made changes to there LC reels. After reviewing all the Posts it seems that for every person that likes
them there are five that had problems. The Convectors just came out
maybe they got it right. One of the major complaints was the Line Counter and the position of the reset button. From looking at the pictures and the parts lists I have a feeling they are using the same
counter as in the previous models. Yes they did put a new Drag System
Alum. Spool and Ball Bearings in the Convector which would make it really smooth. But I'm buying a LC reel to do just that, count line
or revolutions ( what ever )never read of any problems with the Daiwa's in that aspect. If I were just buying one I would give the Okuma a try. However since I am putting four trolling outfits together I went with the four SG27LCW's and matched them up with St.Croix GT80M Pro Glass Rods. The 27's also hold more line then the 20DX's, I'll also be using them down the Jersy Shore for Blues and Stripers the extra yds. may be needed. If I went with the Okuma's I would have saved around 80 bucks, but after what I spent on four outfits it didn't seem like that much. I will most likely buy a few of the Convectors later on. But right now I have a lot to learn about
trolling and don't feel like being a product tester.

I agree, stay away from Okuma's. I know of several charters who had lots of trouble with them last year. Spend the extra & be happy.
