On Saginaw Bay in my experience, targeting bigger walleye versus many, is often a course of using different techniques and fishing different locations, especially in mid summer. I'm not saying that pulling a 10 pounder in 8 feet of water where you just caught 15 two pounders in a row is impossible. I often manage this feat several times a year on my charters. But going especially for the monsters usually involves deeper, colder waters as a whole on the Saginaw. Techniques using meat, larger cranks, or smaller one's weighted with snap weights that get your offering down, give you a better chance of catching a wall hanger. Keel sinker rigs with a flutter spoon attractor and harness, along with our own Pa's diver has been perfected on the Saginaw. Capt: Dan.

I agree, I'm a big fan of whatever is working. But, if given a choice - I like trolling cranks. There is something about that nasty, bone jarring strike.

Crank's catch bigger fish more consistently. I'M SUPERTROLLING!
Second Choice: jigging spoons; 1/2 to 3/4 oz. in 20 ft. or deeper holes near feeding flats.

Like everyone else, I'll do whatever it takes to catch the fish, but.......trolling is my very last technique. I like having the rod in my hand and being able to tease the fish into biting. I love to toss cranks and to jig. I would rather catch smaller fish by those methods than a chance at a 10+# by trolling. To me, and I know I'm going to get slammed on this :P , trolling ain't really fishin'.
Favorite: Bottom Bouncing with big nightcrawler on a crawler harness
Next: Jig & a minnow
Third: Lindy rig with leech/minnow

I'm with you. Nothing beats or takes more skill than the hands on techniques. It's kinda hard running 10 lines on a river charter though, but fairly easy on the Bay. Capt: Dan.
Pitching cranks and jigs to big eyes in 2' of water.
Splish Splash, it aint a bass.

Pulling Cranks in shallow water has been my favorite for many years, yes it might be considered lazy, but has been highly successful in my case. But with every success comes a failure. I've gotten really poor at working structure with live bait and it gets frustrating when boats all around you are pulling in 'eyes and all I catch is humble pie. That why I vow this year to become a better, Jigger, Live bait rigger, and boat control guru, for at least the first hour or so of opening day. Then its back to pulling cranks. When the line click alarm goes wild and the rod tip is bending. It still quickens the pulse as much as it did the first time.
Good Fishing,
Scott Lee
