Hi,
What is so hot about Reef Runner. Everyone seems to love the bait. I like Rapala. It is the action? Color? Hype?
Just wondering.

Reef runners are not some fad are going to fade away. They have a distinct action that triggers fish under a variety of conditions. The action is a wide rocking wobble that occasionally breaks its pattern and sort of flips well to the side. Plus they have an awesome selection of colors with a durable finish.

I agree with Kid, the action of the long curved body gives them an awesome wobble. I think that the large lip on the Deep Runner makes them kick out ocasionally, enticing strikes, particularly at mid/high trolling speeds (2.5+ MPH). I think that this is especially effective when pulled on in-line planer boards, as they (and the boat) surge with the waves. You have to be careful though, buying Reef Runners is addictive!LOL. There's alot of great colors.

I fish primarily muskies, but those Reef Runner baits do catch fish. On Mille Lac, the McQoids showed me some patterns and structure where we caught some big Eyes!
Gooood luck,

I started using Reef Runners to support the local business. I fish out of Pt. Clinton and that is where CO. is located. Know if i troll for Eyes that is all i use. I think the hottest colors are Wonder Bread, and Blue/Chrome. One day a buddy was out in his boat. We trolled the same exact water, he was 1/4 mile behind me. We were set up exactly the same execpt he had to Rip Sticks. He used Husky Jerks etc. My boat pulled in 72 walleye, He had only 24.

Great on walleye but also caught a couple of nice muskys over 40 in. on the trout colored Reef Runner last year. Coach

They work!! Chrome and blue, and fire tiger are my favorite colors. I haven't tried a lot of other colors yet but will be trying some different colors this summer. Little Rippers are my favorite crank bait. Watch the hooks ! I got one in my finger last year removing a rock bass from the lure. Those hooks are very sharp. I thought I saw a posting recently that they had switched hooks to a different mfg. I can't imagine why, other than money. Why change something that is near perfect?

I heard that Rapala bought the patent rights to the VMC reverse barb trebles.

I heard a similar story. Who knows - maybe I'll be able to buy Shad Raps without having to replace the hooks when I get home.
Regarding Reef Runners, they are one AWESOME crankbait (all of 'em)!

Canadian walleyes love 'em too. But make sure you keep your tackle box closed as they've been known to jump in the boat and steal 'em. Some of 'em look good enough to eat myself. Truly awesome cranks.

Which model reef runners....suspending or deep divers, or both?

Deep Reefs, Shallow Rips, and the Ltl Rippers in Deep and Shallow. They all work.
There are times though when I've seen a ThunderStick, Husky Jerk, or Rogue pull more fish. However, if I could only have one kind in the tackle box it would definately be Reef Runners!!

Hi BrickBoy,
You didn't say where you fished at or at what depth. There are a lot of different Lures that work great in certain areas. You have to take in consideration the type of bait fish is where you are fishing. You say you do good with Rapalas ,than thats the Lure for you.You know we all do good on certain Lures but we are always looking for that Lure that we can catch them on every cast.I am almost postive that you have tried other Lures (right). The great thing is to read in here how other guys do their thing and learn from them and maybe they can learn from you how you run Rapalas.

How many different styles of Rapala's are there? Shap raps and Husky jerks are our favorites but that doesn't mean the others will or won't catch fish in the same spot. As you said every lure has it's place. It just has to be used at the right place at the right time. If he wants to close his mind to ReefRunners, that's his choice, but the versatile walleye fisherman will make sure his bases are covered.
