well, i fell in twice today at hudson!......last week i posted it was thin while valpo lakes had plenty of ice...so i thought with the deep freeze it would be safe...i still didnt see any tracks on the lake but figured it was ok so i went out and there was the slush again....i kept going "knowing" it was safe and about 200 yds out saw a dark hole...left my sled and investigated and measured the ice depth...a little more than 1"....so i backed away and in i went!@....only up to my hips as i grabbed the ice and it didnt break so i crawled out and crawled to my sled heading back i took a different angle since my original track went thru some heavy slush so i hugged the shore closere and when i got to the docks behind the resaurant i fell in again right at the dock but again caught myself as i was heading down so only got 1/2 wet....not fishing there ever again on ice....steve

all right, you're banned from the ice for the rest of this season! We can't be loosing our resident Vet to some kind of preventable accident. Stay home, we'll send some fillets over if need be!

Glad your ok its a scary feeling for sure. If you don,t use one a spud bar can be your life saver esp on ice your unsure of.
Steve,
If there is snow on the ice it's a real insulator and the deep freeze isn't going to work as fast as you think it should.
Glad you're ok. I'll bet that was scary. I would never want to fall through the ice...ever.

Stevie - sorry to hear about your experience at Hudson Lake. I think the same is true about Wauhab lake here in Valpo. It is really wierd since loomis and long seem fine that Wauhab seems so thin. Did your crash thru the ice trigger a code BROWN or just a tighter pucker!?? Glad you are ok and able to fish another day.

Remember Stevie - you can't take it with you! You need to lower the bar at work a bit. If you do not do it now, when are you gonna do it. It is now 2010 - do you think you are living forever. Maybe you should have been a footdoc! We do not make near as much as the vets but we do get to fish a bit.

I know the feeling vetspet. I've gone through twice. Once up to the waist, another completely under. Scary stuff. Cold kills. Luckily I learned my lesson when I went through the first time, which I was alone. Thankfully it was up to my waist and I was able to haul my self out once I calmed down. Vowed to never to go out alone again. And that paid off when a pressure ridge gave way and I went in. Friend saved my life.
moral of my tale, never go alone even when the ice is 'safe'.

Yeah i live Hudson lake for 20 years..now..And behind the casino/restaurant is a warm fed spring so the ice is always soft there..i myself have fell in there once my first time walking over there..As long as u dont walk out over there..witch is bad fish..try in front of the island or in the north channel if u ever come back i went this year and caught alot of nice bluegills..and so many pike i stopped setting tip ups out..try to get out from one of the roads by the island and you should have a great time fishing on the lake
