Does the side scan transducer replace the current 2-D transducer on my HDS-8? Or will I need to mount two transducers, the new side scan one and the existing transducer?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can go either way. I left the 2D transducer on mine so I could split the screen and view the structure scan and the 2D at the same time. I wanted to see the difference in the two displays.

Thanks for the info. Does the ss transducer have the ability to show the traditional 2 d display on the unit? I am fearful that I don't have a good mounting spot for two transducers and it would be nice to sometimes see things in the old way.

No, the SS transducer runs at 800Khz, your 2D is probably 200 Khz. Is your 2D transducer mounted on your transom?

I was always was always under the impression if you want "traditiona" sonar reading you require the regualr skimmer 'ducer and if you wanted downscan and side imaging you require the additional LSS-1 'ducer and module.

Hope this helps.

Yes the 2d is on the transom. 1999 Lund 1700 fisherman. Any one know how far away from each other a 2d and a ss transducer can be?

You'll have room, if your 2d transducer is mounted on the right side of your transom, mount the SS transducer on the left side in relatively the same place as your 2D unit. There is no minimum or maximum separation since the run at different frequencies.

If your interested in using the "overlay" feature, Lowrance recommends the transducers be mounted not more than 1' apart for proper operation.

And the closer the better. Mount it to the inside and just slightly below transom mount. Mine are seprated by only about six inches.

The 2D/structure scan overlay is a nice feature. It will not work properly
it the Structure scan transducer is mounted on the opposite side of the boat from the Transom mount transducer.
