I have the chance to buy a 17' tri-hull cheap. Probably use primarily in Sandusky Bay and inland lakes, but I'd like to know the level of safety of a tri-hull on Lake Erie in waves of 1-3's or 2-3's ??

I went out on Erie in a friends 16' Tri-Hull once on a calm day, we cruised from the mouth of the Detroit River to Fermi to fish, within an hour there were 3 to 4 foot rollers coming at us, in the 2 hours it took us to get back the windshield fell off and one of the seats broke loose from the impact of the waves, we had serious doubts if the boat was going to hold together, scariest day I ever had on the water.

NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only buy the boat - if you don't care about your life, your back, and your health.

Lots of used deep V's out there that will be much better for you.

Take care

I had an 1969 Crestliner 17.5 "Muskie". I swear to you we sailed 6-8 footers one day. Would not recomend anything more than constant 4's. But also be very wise on that lake with a small boat. If that wind shifts from the NorEast get your buts out of there! Alawys carry a radio.
