: Tight Grease Zerks

I have a Trailmaster trailer with the center grease zerk that sends grease through the hub to the inside, then back along the outside until it is exposed. EZ Lube, I think, but may be wrong about the name.

Anyway, my grease gun is a decent one from Farm and Fleet and it pushes on to the zerk without much effort but is VERY difficult to remove from the zerk. I replaced my zerks with new ones but it is still very difficult to remove the gun fitting from the zerk.

Do you think my grease gun fitting is somehow defective? Anyone else have major difficulty in pulling the fitting off of the zerk?

I also had the same problem with my previous shorelander trailer zerk with the same grease gun.

Thanks

Its the gun not the fitting. Having the same issue on another trailer should tell you that

try twisting the gun tip gently off to one side instead of pulling it straight off.

You can always get a new tip for the gun if it is an issue

Sounds like it's working as it's supposed to. There are jaws inside the coupler that are intended to grip the zerk. Yes, they can be a little "tough" sometimes...Give it a yank, it'll come off.

If it really bothers you, buy a 4 jaw, they tend to be easier to remove. Im guessing yours is a 2 jaw. I still say there's nothing wrong with it...grab hold and pull.

On some grease guns you can twist the end before you put it on and it will have a looser fit.

Thanks, I will try a different grease gun coupling.
The one I have requires a major tugging to get it off. Sometimes I have to grip it with a channel lock and tap it off with a hammer. When "twisting" a bit to get it off I actually removed the zerk by turning it CCW too much. Did not know it would come off by twisting the gun coupling.

Bond,
I doubt that the grease zerk is your problem.
Rather, I think that the issue is too much pressure coming back into your grease gun from the fitting on the trailer.

I have had this issue with other grease zerk situations on various vehicles.
In every case, I found that there was an issue with the joint that I was greasing. i.e. the grease was not being distributed as it was expected to be able to do and thus, pressure from the gun was being injected into the joing and causing the excess back pressure on the gun.

I might suggest, that before you grease the joint again, that you disassemble the joint, axle etc. that you are greasing.

Then, with the joing completely disassembled, use the grease gun to lubricate the joint and insure that you get a nice easy flow of grease through the grease zerk, through the grease zerk mounting area and into the joint area. Then, with the joint disassembled - remove the grease gun. My guess is that it will be quite easy to remove the gun.

Clean everything up, reassemble the joint or axle and move on.

Good luck

usually if thats the case you will feel resistance in the gun when you try to pump grease. A lot of times the grease hardens in the joint also. this usually only happens in poorly maintainted joints

The tips on my grease guns is adjustable, to the point I can loosen or tighten. Check yours, it may also be adjustable.

Or, you could spend $3 and buy a new / different tip for your grease gun.
Take care
