I guess they are just getting a picture and then putting them back in the water

Stay off the pipe...and don't forget to wipe.

The good Lord know's how to grow 'em;we should know when to say when. Sure, take some for the table, but greed is a sin.I would feel sad to take more than one,an obvious trophy, home. How much is enough?Thankfully, these picture's are rare. So are the fish.I love a limit as much as anyone;just limit your keep.

Now days I would not want to come in with those fish where a bunch of people could see me. What a waste!!

There was a day not that long ago that those stringers of fish were something to be proud of. Thankfully those days have passed (for most of us). Commercial fishing in Erie if thats where they came from should also be banned for fish like that.

the fish in the picture were lawful taken aboard a charter boat in lake erie. The 2 brothers in the picture fish the lake once a year and eat all the fish, nothing wasted. Way must there be someone on this board that always has too start something when big fish are involed, when the law was not broken.

I usually stay out of these discussions, but I agree with you! Even though I don't condone keeping those big females, especially in the numbers shown here, I don't think it's right to bash people who have different views! At least as long as they're legal. If you feel that strongly, I think your efforts should be spent trying to get the laws or limits changed! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

Howdy Sluggo,

I'd also like to point out a few things. In some instances, straight catch and release does not work as intended. Selective harvest works better.

Also, yes it is a persons legal right to keep stringers like that. But in this day and age an angler should consider the body of water the fish are removed from as well. If these fish were pulled from Erie, where the numbers of big fish are or have been plentiful, it is not as bad as taking them from the Wisconsin River.

Perhaps bad is not the right word there. It won't do as much damage.

Every angler has to know the laws. Every angler should also be aware of the biological situations on the body of water fished.

I personally would not keep a stringer like that to eat, don't wanna glow in the dark!!! :P

Also, I wouldn't keep a stringer of fish like them to mount. Photos and measurments for everyone, then replica mounts. Replicas today are better than ever, last longer than traditional skin mounts and are not much more expensive. Add to that, with replicas you could have your stringer mount done one or two fish a year, to ease the family budget.

Have fun...........R

Redd ruff and sore:

You probably shouldn't come the WC gathering at Huron during a good year, if you don't want to see harvests like this!

It's a pretty common sight! If you want to see travesty just cruise over the border and look at all the Canadian nets.

My opinion as if it mattered: Anglers can't damage this resource unless they do it illegally. External factors (exotic species, pollution, etc.) do most of the damage.

Just because it's legal, doesn't mean you can just forget common sense!! There was a law on the books here in Minnesota that said its legal to beat your wife, as long as you don't use a strap that is over 2"'s wide. Does that mean it's o.k. to smack women around? I hope not.

This can NEVER be condoned, legal or not. I wouldn't care if it was from 20 years ago. I'd look at pictures like this in disgust and shame. Hide it in the drawer and leave it there. I'm glad the regs in my area put an end to stringers like that.

A picture from the past- OK that is how it was!
Now days more guy's wanna keep from seeing this kinda stringer
I think that it is great that fisherman care (Now) than in the past
BUT::::
you gotta remember
Some people only get to fish once in a while, and if they keep a stringer-full of fish (One or two times that they fish, It is probably less fish kept than somebody that fishes all year and only keeps a few each time
It's only fair to let everybody fish legally and keep what they feel
is correct
To each his/her own as long as it is LEGAL
This post is not about keeping illegal quantities but another's opinion of harvesting fish
I share your concerns, but what is legal and fair is not under our control
Practice patiaence(SP) and understanding of this situation and you'll
feel better knowing that you are trying to Share the wealth
thanks

Hogwash they were caught legal and if they or I want to eat them , who are you to tell me that the state of Ohio DNR doesn't know what it is doing . As far as not wanting to show them to anyone back at the dock cause someone might say something YEA RIGHT ! I am going up to Erie this weekend and I don't plan on turning my fish back , you guys give fishing a bad name with this HOGWASH !

I'd have no problem telling these guys what they can and can't keep if I had:

paid for their license.
paid for their charter.
paid for their gas to get them to the dock.
and paid for any other expenses incurred on the trip.

But, since I have paid nothing for their trip, I have no right to tell them what they can and can't keep as long as they are within the law.

Remember that ALL the fish caught out of the Bay of Quinte were LEGALLY caught. Now they have been ALL caught. The fishery is reduced to a fraction of what it once was, and alot of people can take solace that it was all destroyed legally. I find it ironic that most of you guys don't trust the government to spend money wisely, yet you feel you can trust them with YOUR fishery implicitely. The government of the Province of Ontario manages more resources and has more experience doing so than nearly every state combined. Yet, they messed up, and they may again.( re: Bay of Quinte et al.)

Guys I am going to Erie to catch fish so I can eat them . The state of Ohio says I can. If you want to turn your's back go ahead I won't say anything to you but don't you say anything about me or anyone else that is within the law ..

Bigfish1965, You nailed it on the head! The Indians in northern Minnesota netted all the eyes out of Red lake LEGALLY also. There's no excuse for ingnorance! I realize, the trophy size Walleyes are more abundant in the inland seas like Erie and Huron. If your out to get a meal of fish, and all you can catch are 10+ hogs, try changing locations and/or presentation!

They say one picture speaks a thousand words; this one will easily surpass that number.

If they did this everyday, shame on them.

If, like some others, they make one or two trips a year and limit out, thats something different.

If you catch 6 fish in one day, once or twice a year does this make you any worse than someone that keeps 1 fish a day every Saturday and Sunday all season and keeps 50 or more a year? Do the math. Who's doing more damage to the fishery?

Who knows, this may the days catch for several people? We could speculate all day on this one.

Bigfish, if Ontario has all this great experience managing the resources, why are they still gill netting Lake Erie??? What they don't keep is dead anyway. Want to see some tremendous resource waste, go follow a gill net boat for a day!!!!

You know we have name calling and horror stories about how Erie's Eye's will all be gone , if I take my limit of eye's home and eat them . I am not dragging a big net behind my Triton nor am I staying more than three days on Erie so I really doubt if I keep 12 fish that is four fish a day if I am lucky , I doubt that the water level of Erie will go down from me removing all that weight from the bottom . No matter what any of you say or call me I am still keeping my fish to eat ! Do you think the PWT on Erie might hurt the fishing ? NO WAY , I am done with this post .

Hey eric,
I fish mainly Michigan waters and the creel limits are usually 5 eyes per person. In the picture the guy on the right has 7 eyes on his stringer (6 you can see easily and 1 behind his right arm), I'm just wondering what the creel limits are on Erie since you said the fish were taken legally. But anyway, these are some huge fish and they make for a great picture! Greg
