For those of you that have a Humminbird unit with an internal antenna how do you find the reception when the unit is behind a windshield and do you get interference with a full canopy on. Not sure if I should go with an extertnal unit or not. Thanks.

I wouldn't hassle with the external antenna unless you have a metal roof or are mounting the antenna in the dash/console. I have my 798csi mounted on the dash under a very large windshield, with a heavy duty welded aluminum frame, and very thick bimini above it. Even in bad whether when I zipper the vinyl sides on my boat and have moderate snow and ice buildup on the top, I haven't once had any issues with reception. On one of my poorer choices in fishing days I got caught in a severe storm and ended up with 2" of ice on the windshield and couldn't see a thing. I was still able to use the unit as my sole guidance to get back to the harbor (I wouldn't recommend this though).

The unit takes about 30-60 seconds to lock when I first get to the lake and then if I happen to turn in off for one reason or another it only takes about 5-10 seconds to relock.
