I just started to fish on Fourth Lake,N.Y..I caught two Lakers on tip-ups using medium shinners. What lures do you guys suggest for jigging?I have targeted walleyes, perch and pan-fish on Oneida Lake, but this is a totally new ball game. What a huge difference of a fight compared to walleyes, amazing!!

I know there are a lot of folks here that have way more lake trout ice fishing experience than I do, I only know what has worked very well for me on my last three winter trips to Canada. I used an assortment of painted jig heads from 1/2 - 1 oz, mainly in white, bone & glow white. I then used an assortment of Zoom Flukes and Super Flukes in white, albino & white ice on the jig heads. On each trip north I fished with different groups of locals whom all had their favorite lake trout jig/jigging spoon etc, and while everyone caught fish for the most part, it seemed I was having slightly better success with the jig head and fluke. I'm no expert, but I'd give the jig/fluke rig at least a try, I think you'll be pleased. Also caught/released a couple of muskies thru the ice using this rig, and quite a few pike when we fished shallower waters & humps.

I really like the hit & the fight thru the ice with lake trout, it's a whole nuther ball game!! Good luck with your hard water fishing, we don't get fishable hard water here in Oklahoma!!

I have done Ok on large white Swedish Pimples with a minnow (preferably smelt) head on them. I found braided line to help tremendously in the 120-200 foot depths of Michigan's Crystal Lake.
I have also tried glow powerbait tubes in white or silver/blue on leadhead jigs but caught way more burbot than lakers.
They are fun!

white tube jigs are hard to beat, northland airplane jigs always work also. I use powerbaits in glow color on a good size jig head so you can get down deep fast. always work the whole water column, aggressive lakers will chase a bait very high off the bottom and smack it hard. were you can use it, ciscos or any shiner (dead) will work well on your tube or airplane jig. another lure is the cicada, or any blade bait similar.

White tube jigs with a minnow, seem to work well for us.

The #6 or #5 Luminescent Orange Dace Salmo Chubby Darter is another good one. The #6 or #5 Gold Metallic Orange another, lots of flash and wobble, for active jigging anywhere in the water column. ;)

i will second the zoom flukes in the colours mentioned....

along with white tubes...
