I hope somone can answer this for me. In the past I have always taken the hooks off my thundersticks and replaced them with number 6 Mustad triple grip hooks. These are the same size that come on the t-sticks. I have gotten some more old style t-sticks and bought triple grips but I screwed up and got number 8 instead. They are just a little smaller. My questions is does hook size play any part in action of the lure. Would i be better off returning the #8's and getting #6's or wont it make that big of a diference?

When I replace hooks I like to go one size BIGGER to increase the hook gap. You can usually go up one size without affecting action of the bait by too much. I wouldn't want to go smaller. The size hook is there to afford clearance on the baits and increase hooking percentages. A lighter hook probably does enhance a baits action though so it might be worth an experiment. If it was me, I'd go back and get #4's but if you're not comfortable with that then get the #6's and know they were the same size.

A lighter bait will provide a more active presentation. This may be a good thing with more active fish as the water warms but early spring you may be better served with a more subtle action. I would always want the largest hook gap possible with a given bait for bettter hooking %s. Lighter wire but larger hooks would be my preference in most cases.

I try to use the same size that the lure came with, but I know a lot of guys use a size bigger. If it's not a lot of trouble, I'd exchange the 8's and get the 6's, otherwise, you might have self-doubts and you'll be kicking yourself if something goes wrong.

On the other hand, if circumstances force you to keep the 8's, then I'd take a pliers and bend each point outward a little to increase the gap.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a good relationship with the store where I bought the hooks, and they exchanged them no questions asked.

i like to switch the hooks with # 2 triple grips, like the better hook-up,s and doesnt really alter the action.
