You can be right or wrong on this one. Look at www.pickerel.com. This fish is not a walleye. It's also called a Chain Pickerel. It's fairly common in New England. For a long time Ontario called walleye "pickerel". Last time I was there, they were calling them "walleye".

We used to call Walleye pickeral, but the fact remains, it's just not correct. The pickeral is closer to a pike than a walleye. I do use walleye now.....

Thing is I was at our local Home show,,and there was a guy showing fishing tips, and some stories and such. and a question was asked are they the same or different?,,,the guy said different. I can't recall anything that is different about a walleye and a pickeral,,,but i do agree a chain picjeral is like a pike. O O , i better go,i'm confusing myself.

But didn't they used to call walleye Yellow pike or somthing?

All the locals here (Manitoba) call walleye's pickerel. When it's netted and sold in our supermarkets, it's labeled as pickerel fillets. I didn't know there was a difference.

Pickerel are in the pike family, walleye are in the perch family. I realize that some people use different names.

I had a friend at work who went to Canada twice a year and for years he told me that the two fish he caught the most were pickerel and smallmouth.

Then we had our first opportunity to fish together in the states. Pretty soon he caught a pickerel and as he was bringing it into the boat, he said "what the ##### is that?" I said, "Mark, it's a pickerel, what do you mean what's that, you told me for years that you were catching pickerel in Canada."

Well, to end the story we figured out that all along he had been catching pike, they just happened to call them pickerel where he stayed.

The walleye is from the perch family, the various pickeral flavors are from the pike family. The world record pickeral is 9lb.6oz., caught in Georgia. Thread #11649, Oct. of '01, will explain the biological facts about the two fish families in post 14 or 15.

Some resturants here in Michigan still lists pickeral on the menu. They actually mean walleye. Some oldtimers still call them pickeral and many in Ontario call them pics. Always like to argue with people on this subject. But thats what they were taught or info got handed down from grandparents and parents.

Here's a couple of pages that will settle the issue. Pickerel is a perfectly acceptable name throughout much of Canada and some of the U.S. for what many people call walleye. Pickerel is also an acceptable name in other parts of North America for a member of the pike family. This inconsistent use of names is why scientists use Latin names when referring to specific species.

Listed below are two websites that show pickeel as an acceptable (perhaps preferred) name for walleye. The second link is more official, but requires Adobe Acrobat to read.
