I have a 1996 115 Merc. OB. T/T motor had a meltdown. Do I need to lift off the merc. to remove the t/t. and is it a major process overall? I hate to pay a tech to do this if could be done in the garage. Local techs want $500 for the service which includes an after market trim motor. Thanks in advance, Dave

PikeHunter,
You should be able to do this with little problem. I have never worked on a Merc. But the other's I've done, I done myself. I took it to a electric motor repair shop. They were able to rebuild it for under $70.00 a lot cheaper then new.

Hey thanks Jeff,
For some reason the o/b kept trying to lift up while under power and I had to keep tweeking it down so I could get back to the ramp. As my luck would have it the t/t motor was completely ruined. It got so hot the internals was fried. Can the t/t motor be swapped out without having to take o/b off. Thanks again, Dave

Thanks ndfishin. You could be right on the solenoid. Makes sense. Interested in selling manual? Dave

Yes, relatively easy to remove it without taking the outboard off the boat. You do have to pull a large pin so that you can tilt the outboard way up. After that its a couple wires and 4 bolts/screws.. I've done it a couple time & it can be in and out in about 20 minutes, but probably better plan on longer the first time. Those tilt trim motors are pretty spendy (thinking aftermarket is $130-140).

Replacing the T & T motor & or solenoid may not be the "fix" to what may have created the meltdown! I had a very similar situation last Fall when I went down to the coast to fish. The problem was actually in the T & T switch itself. It was doing the same thing, constantly trying to raise the motor while under power and I'd have to keep trying to lower it. After a few minutes of this I knew I'd burn something out/up if it persisted so I disconnected the power to the T & T until we got to the ramp, loaded the boat and went to the shop. Found out it was the switch in the control housing at the helm, got it replaced and have not had the problem since. You might want to have that checked when you get it all back together.

Thanks Hawker. I'll check out the switch. That would be just my luck. Inexpensive switch ends up costing a few hundred. B-O-A-T Bring On Another Thousand!

I also had a similar situation a few years ago, it was the trim switch that was on the control panel by the bow and the TM that cause mine to trim up by it self.
