I found these at an online store for 49.00 new. Single paddle handle but that doesnt bother me. I will be using them for trolling cranks and occasionally for Salmon on Michigan. I know a little small for that. What line and test would you use for a good allaround setup? I will use boards occasionaly also and dont know how they hold with the braids or fireline.

Tri-lene 17# XT or XL clear or blue...Those small reels have a pretty good spool capacity.

The 17's will be too small for salmon or trout on Lake MI. They are really designed for small fish applications just because they don't hold enough line. I won't use anything smaller than a 47 on Lake MI and most of my walleye reals are 47 as well, but have a few 27's in the mix.

would the 27's work or be enuff for trolling for mostly eyes? unlikely that i will end up going out on the big pond at all for salmon

I have a couple of SG17LC that I spool up with 15# Big Game monofiliment. I have used these rods for salmon on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron with my downriggers and never had a problem with getting spooled. I think that the Accudepths in the 17 size would be fine for limited forays for salmon but for heavy use I would upgrade to the Sealines or Tekotas. The drag system is better in my opinion. Some of the Wisconsin Lake Michigan guys are starting to use 10 and 12 pound test line and claim they are getting more strikes with the lighter line. I might try that 12 pound but am a little too leary yet to try the 10. Just my opinions and thoughts.

That's what small diameter braids are for. I have 27's with 100 yards of 10# mono backer and 150 yards of Power Pro 15# / 4 diameter. Works great for both walleye and Lake Michigan Trout/Salmon.

For sure if you are going to use the rod/reel for dipsey divers you certainly should use braid or fireline so you can trip them. Mono just does not work well with dipseys. I always use snubbers on my dipsey rods to give at least some stretch for hard hitting salmon. I've never fished for big walleyes on Lake Erie or Green Bay but I would think that some stretch would be good for pig walleyes. If you use no stretch lines for long lining I would recomend a long downrigger type rod to keep fish buttoned up. This stuff has worked well for me for salmon and steelhead.

Excellent points. Medium or medium heavy rods with Slow to Moderate actions. Fiberglass rods are usually better than graphite rods in this regard as well. That provides the "shock absorbing" to compliment the no stretch braids.
