Why is it that every time I turn the tube to an outdoor channel I get a bass show????? It seems like for every 10 bass shows there will be one walleye. Coming from walleye country, I have never had any desire to fish bass nor watch it on tv. Does anyone have an answer??

Because for every one walleye fisherman, there are ten bass fisherman!

Hey, as long as those guys are out there chasing green carp on some weed-choked swamp down south, they're leaving the walleye alone.

SET the hook!!!

If you get the Outdoor Channel you can view our show. The Outdoor Quest airs at 9:30 EST on Thursday night. 7 of the 13 episodes this season are walleye techniques. Tommorrow nights show is on planer boards and walleyes. For a complete schedule of our season you can go to http://www.theoutdoorquest.com and click on the TV Series button. We welcome any comments on making our show better.
Thank you Rich

I get tired of the bass shows also. The guys fishing look like real goof balls dragging the fish across the top of the water making it look like the fish is fighting or it's a monster. I would watch anything else like fishing for saltwater fish, salmon, catfish or even baitfish (a.k.a. trout).

Well i dont see why there is only 1 real walleye show and that is when In-Fishermen decides to do a show on one. To be honest i really enjoy watchin the PWT when it is on, but now i think ill be busy makin my own personal fishing shows saturday mornings. I think there should be more fishing shows on during the week...

And really there is no way cathing bass can be as hard as catchin walleyes, any1 ever go to Erie for Smallmouths...you can catch those things 1 after another for as long as you want...Maybe it is harder to make a walleye show just based on how slow walleye fishing can be at times...just a thought, but i too wish to get rid of some bass shows.

I do go to the Outdoor Life Channel, but recently think it should change its name to the Bicycle channel. Who watches that stuff and don't tell me "different strokes for different folks". There simply can't be that many bicycle riders that want to watch other bicycle riders can there??????? I know there are lots of fisher people and hunters.

Bass fishing is bad but fly fishing is the worst. I usually can find some walleye fishing on TV on weekends. But during the week a guy does not have a prayer. I also dont mind watching the spanish fly jose can pull some big fish in.

Yes these show's are becoming very predictable, sad to say.I vote for more,or at least a couple show's in prime-time. There's about enough angler's in the country to fill the rating's bucket;50 million time's over.It does take a bit more skill to catch thoe willey old Walleye's,'eh men?Think about it;tie on a rusty old hook, preferably bent, and catch a Bass. Tie on a few bead's,with a clevis, and spinner,of course matching the color with the water clarity;along with a lazer sharp kale style hook, and thread on a worm,of course the one's that you've raised like your own-blow a little air in him and back troll a nice steep drop, yeah,in summer only. And hope to catch a Walleye.Man,I've started it now!LOL!!!

Hi Ufda I agree OLN (Outdoor Life Network) does have a lot of other programing on it. The Outdoor Channel however doesn't have bikes or such stuff, just hunting, fishing and a little 4 wheeling.

Well, maybe it's best that bass shows dominate. Afterall, the lakes I fish already have too darn many people on them. I'm not sure I want more shows pushing walleye fishing. Let the bass guys keep thinking bass are the be-all-end-all. As long as the stay off the lakes I'm fishing I'm happy!

Try finding a Muskie Show on the tube.

I don't mind the bass shows as much as the 10,000 Turkey hunting shows. Geeeeez! I like to hunt turkeys... but how many times can you watch a gobbler get called in to a decoy and get whacked???

I wish I could get the Outdoor Channel, I have DirectTV and all we can receive is the Outdoor Life Channel which has very little interest for those of us who enjoy hunting and fishing shows. I've complained to Direct TV, but they tell me not not enough people have contacted them, so they believe they have a pretty good deal going with the Outdoor Life channel. I know the Dish network carries the Outdoor Channel, so my only alternative is to complain or switch. Give me fishing or hunting over bicycling anytime.

Hee he he...I am with you on that one T-Mac. Pay attention to the bass fishing shows and other outdoor fishing shows and then watch the walleye fishing show. There is soo much more content on one walleye show compared to the 10 bass shows. All those guys do is jabber jabber cast jabber jabber ...son!..jabber jabber ...son!..retrieve, set the hook...jabber plane the 1lb bass across the water..son!...throw it back so it SMACKS the water and cast again!

They are so used to giving no courtesy or respect to the resources with there crotch rocket boats and their lack of respect to the fish. It just makes me chuckle almost every time I watch one of those bass shows!

With the walleye shows, technique is discussed, presentation, methods, colors, speeds, and often at the end, a good walleye recipe is discussed. So much more pure to me...

That's because anybody can catch Bass...Cast to the shore, reel to the boat..cast to the shore reel to the boat; you get the picture. But walleye fishin' poses more of a challenge and they might end up with too much "dead air" and nobody watching. Besides that, the "bass boys fish when it's nice out and the cameras don't get wet, your fingers dont get cold, etc. Heck, a nice sunny day and a few changes of clothes; you can tape three or four Bass shows in one day!

Now wait a minute. Who the bleep has much time to watch any of that junk? That's right junk. Even the walleye shows. Every time I turn around they are catching them with some little rinky spinner rig, or a jig and twister, or pulling stick baits at x mph. And we call the bass guys dumb? Sorry, but I think in 25 years I've seen two fishing shows I actually watched the entire episode. To me they are all boring, and the walleye are no better than the bass.

One more thing, if you think smallmouth are that easy to catch, I suggest you try to find them in the hottest part of the summer when they suspend. You won't be able to drag your little live bait rigs and catch them. Each species has it's easy and tough times to catch em.

Al, keep talking like this and we'll have to exile you to BassCentral!!!

I'm tired of all the Salt water stuff myself. Whether it's Sailfish or flyfishing for Snook and Redfish. I'm instantly changing the channel. Oh Carp! Another Turkey show! Or quail on some plantation down South. Or Catfish on In-fisherman. I can't wait until I've seen so many Walleye Shows that I complain about them! Don't think it is possible to happen.

I like the Walleye shows and dont like the Bass shows. It seems
the guys makeing the shows have fallen into a dull pattern.

I would like to see some new blood making Walleye shows too. With
computer graphics and awesome new technology some great instruction and wonderful video images could be delivered...I like all the guys
doing Walleye shows now but someone needs to step up and take it to a new level.

I agree, the bass shows are annoying. Bill Dance is the worst one - let's watch Bill giggle as he reels in another one off someone's stocked farm pond.

Even the mighty In Fisherman seems to show more bass segments than Walleye. That's just the price for being in the minority. Bass fishing is just much bigger on a nation-wide scale.

I get OLN on DirecTV. At least they show In Fisherman reruns at 5:30 (central) every day now. Although the bass shows and bicycle shows get old, I can say I start flipping channels pretty quickly when they haul out the daily lumberjack bonanza. Watching people climb poles and cut wood is like... watching paint dry.

04-11-2002, 06:04 AM
hahaha....you guys are brutal. i've often wondered about the bass fishing mentality on those saturday mornings when i'm trying to scratch up a muskie in the middle of 3 10 dollar bass tournaments. why would anyone invest in a 70 MPH, 250 HP glitter boat and all those shirt patches just to catch a 10 inch bass? Well, I think I've figured it out. Its not about the fishing. I think most of these guys totally IDOLIZE the lifestyle of the few million dollar winners of the bass tournament circuit and on Saturday mornings they can pretend to be part of it. Hence, the popularity of the stupid bass shows. To each his own.

Once again, we are using the word "bass", not largemouth and smallmouth as it should be. Smallmouth provide endless challenges and fun for those privlaged to have the beasties roam their waters. The reason you see so many largemouth shows and not smallmouth, is that seasonally the smallies just aren't going to cooperate as much as the greenies...simple as that.

I can't think of any other type of fishing that is as dynamic as smallie fishing. Walleye fishing doesn't even come close. Hey, I like my 'eyes, but they just don't compete.

We all don't have Lake Erie or whatever lake in our backyard, and the smallies remain a challenge year after year.

BTW, watching shows on the PWT are like watching paint dry. All these boats all doing the same thing....*yawn*. Don't see too many lively fish make it to the platform either.

I agree with someone up the board about the fly fishing show....WHEW!...they have GOT to go. Why do they speak riverside like they're in church?

04-11-2002, 07:19 AM
Gotta say I don't agree that bass are easier to catch. They just pose different challenges. Of course, the challenge with 'eyes is everything leading up to and including getting the hook set. After that, you may as well be reeling in a wet rag (just kidding guys). With bass, there are just as many challenges and a wider range of techniques. Just my opinion though.

As much as I'd like to defend the fly fishing shows, they all think they are writing a novel or something. "The sun danced like a million glass shards on the water as the reeds rustled in the cool summer breeze...." Somebody pass me an airsickness bag.

Thank you for the votes of confidence. It is our first season and we made some blunders no argument on that
from me. And we learned that you can't please everyone, but we did have a heck of a good time doing it.
One word of defense of the bass aficionados, they sure have the lingo down, I mean it just sounds like you are
having so much fun when you're timber doodling, rigging your worm, buzz'n, jerk'n and walking the dog! No
insult intended! LOL
So tell me what types of shows or techniques do you guys want to see done on a show?
Thanks, Rich

I'll tell you one thing I can't stand is watching Jimmy Houston suck face with the fish he catches. If that wasn't one of the dumbest things ever started! The only thing that's worse is when I see someone else doing the same thing...disgusting. I would like to see Jimmy give a french kiss to a big eye! Kinda like licking that frozen steel railing in winter...hehehe.

Supertroller....they would ban me too. I should correct myself. I said two episodes....make it a half dozen. For a few months I lived in an area that aired Larry Nixon's bass show. I don't claime to know it all, but each time it was a lesson, and I'm no virgin to that stuff. Infish at one time could hold my attention better than most, but once they delved into the sub species of sport fish, I gave up on them.

I will say one thing, on another subject, some of the best speakers I've heard:
Bass-Nixon, Brauer, AND LINDER
Walleye- Anderson and then Linder Again...that's it....You are a going to ban me again. I've sat through some excrutiatingly sorry seminars by some big names from PWT. I'm not saying they know nothing...they know a lot. They should watch a few of the better bass guys. Some of them really have their act together...and some are yawners too.

The real answer is money. Most bass shows seem to be infomercials in disguise. Tune in and see what the good 'ol boys are selling. There may be a little talk about technique but most is praise for the golden bait of the day. That is what the sponsering companies are paying for. I just keep waiting for billy mays to break in with an 800 number and a 2 for the overpriced price of one deal. Boy, we all need to hit the lake.

Naaaah..... just having a little fun with ya. You're welcome here. Had to give you static because of your comments on the rinky spinners and jigs. For a lot of guys, that is their bread and butter lures. We can't have you running down the standard presentations. You won't get too many complaints for Smallmouth comments from guys on here. Usually can stir up quite a hornets nest though with Largemouth fishing questions. We'll just have to work on you a little harder to get you more in line with our thinking on traditional walleye methods.

I'm not sure if I totally agree on the walleye vs bass argument, but I will say Hank Parker is the biggest ##### redneck on TV since the Dukes of Hazzard. This guy does nothing but discuss how good of a fisherman he is and promote his sons in his show. I know its his show, but swear he makes guys like Shaw Grigsby and Jimmy Houston look like Bill Gates.
He's a moron.

Actually what I always think of is when Bill Dance is playing with that fish at the edge of the boat is a big ole Gator chomp down on it when Bill is getting ready to reach into the fish's mouth... It sure looks like he is baiting to me.

I bet that would make that Vol Hat spin on his head. :)
