I've trolled mostly spoons and worm harnesses. What do you people do with the split ring on your hard baits? Take them off? Tie dirrectly to them? Or put a snap on them. I want to try the different ones this year. Hot'n Tots, Renosky, Shad Raps, Risto Raps and a few others that I have accumulated and haven't used.
Thanks to all who answer.

I leave the Split Ring on. I use just a stright snap-no swivel. A swivel in this case can cause line twist. Sounds like you got a few good baits to start with. Pick up a copy of Precision Trolling as well.

I fish with a snap-swivel on most of my crankbait's-work's good.Any line twist,is taken care of by cutting swivel off,and putting the line in the water, paying it out as you move and let it be pulled out,and it untwist's.Troll out another bait, and don't waste time on the water.Take's about 5 min. At the river or creek, just do the same, and let the current take you're line downstream, and untangle.I don't get twists' from anything but spinner's;bad that is.

Thanks guys. I have precission Trolling. Got it last year and it stays in the boat. Went out first time without it, now I leave it in the boat. It doesn't do much good when it's 50 miles away. I asked this question because I think I remember reading last year to take the split rings off and use a snap. Just wanted to see what most of you do. I've caught a few fish on hard baits but not enough to justify using them that much. Most have come on Erie Dearies, jigs, harnesses and spoons.

i leave on the ring and use a small duo-lock snap.

Fish Hound, the general consensus is this; if it comes with a split ring, use it. If there is no split ring just attach with the snap. Also remember to use ONLY round ended snaps. This allows the bait to run as intended by the manufacturers.

I agree with the if it comes with a split ring use it.A much better split ring is the oval one endorsed by Rick Clunn in bass pro catalog. You never have the end of the ring by your line and it gives your lure a true wobble.Buy a pack and you will be impressed, they aren't that much at all, you can pick up a good split ring pliers in sporting goods departments at K-mart or Walmart for about $3.99.Roy

Now there is a product that I have not been aware of and has use- Oval split rings make good sense. Thanks
