I've had good luck using bouncers and long snells with a minnow in the spring. I don't typically use a spinner, just a hook or a hook with a single bead. Usually fishing slowly is most effective, although there are times, even in cold water, when the fish seem to want their dinner to move a little faster...go figure. I'm not big on hard and fast rules in fishing, and the rule some folks seem to have about no bouncers in the spring is ridiculous, IMO. Do what works, no matter what the conditions. If rigs work go riggin', if jigs work go jiggin', if cranks work go crankin', if bouncers work go bouncin'!

I had some luck last spring using bottom bouncers with a small smile blade spinner and minnow. The smile blades spin even on a real slow presentation. They seemed to work as well as the jigs and minnows other fishermen were using. -- mark
