View Full Version : E Collar
I read through the string "Shock Collar" and need some help. I have a 1 year old English Setter, currently about half way through obedience training and it's going OK but feel we could use some extra correction from time to time. Considering getting an e-collar. Could anyone suggest a brand that they've been happy with?
Not sure it will work, but I've tried to attach a photo of Smitty.
Thanks,

Looks like a great dog! I would hesitate using an e-collar unless I have read many books concerning training and training with an e-collar. I have seen and heard of many dogs ruined by e-collars when they were used incorrectly. I am not sure what your training has been but there are many books that offer training methods not using an e-collar at all. One good book is "Best way to train your gun dog" the Delmar Smith Method by Bill Tarrant. If you end up going with an e-collar there are several good brands out there just depends on what features and how many $ you want to spend. I have had good luck with Tri-Tronics. Good Luck.
Nice pooch!

I have two English setters that I use for primarily pheasant hunting. I have the Tri-tronics field 90 G2 and it has worked well. It allows me to run both dogs at once very easily. The receivers and transmitter have been very reliable. I use just the tone feature a lot and I like the ability to turn the beepers on the collars on from a distance.

I use the DT H2O 1852, 2 dog training/beeper collar. They are waterproof, the battery lasts a long time, it has 16 levels of stimulation, nick and continues stimulation and the transmitter is light weight.
The integrated beeper can be used in locate, run/point or point only mode and is controlled with the transmitter.
Here is the web site.

If you are just doing basic training and you think you need more correction u need to start over. Collar only used when dog knows all basic obedience. Best thing to do is find local dog training class and attend. They are great for teaching dog and owner basic training.

I use dogtra and have great success.
I started my Vizsla earlier than 1 year with great success. I had taught him basic obedience, sit, stay, lay, circle, etc. When I started the heel command I used a healing stick at first and he learned quickly, but unless I said Heel every 5 seconds he would just run ahead. I started him on the ecollar soon after and it is excellent.
As long as you use the ecollar to reinforce a command he/she already knows it will do wonders. Also be sure to give only enough shock to get a correction, don't set it at 100% or it could scare your dog into submission and ruin him/her. My dog rarely needs more than a 25% via the l.e.d on my remote. I would suggest putting the collar in your hand and using it on yourself to check the settings out. A 25 is about were I can begin to feel the shock, but that is all the dog needs.

I like sportdog,800 series. Do not over correrct your dog,Start on the low setting and when the just starts to move his or hers ears that is where you start.

Check online at the collar clinic. They sell reconditions collars for less than a new one. I bought a Tri-tronics collar there 2 yrs ago and have had no problems.
Just make sure the dog has all basic obedience down and that he can do it in his sleep before using the collar.
