After reading all the great posts on jigging rods I have decided to spend the money on a good one. Lot of great comments on Loomis and St. Croix rods but have not seen much on the Fenwicks. Just curious as to how you would rate them with the Loomis and St. Croix rods before I spend the money. Thanks in advance. Coach

I have a fenwick rod and I love it. I cant remember the modle at this time but i know it was only about $115.00. I have had not problems with it what so ever. I have cought several good sized walleyes on the fenwick. It seems strong and dependibal.

Frankly I don't own any Fenwicks, but up next to Shakespeare, Fenwick provides alot styles, lengths, handles and types of rod. They do also offer some really nice rods both expensive and inexpensive.

I've long ago decided that I can't afford a half-dozen $250 Loomis or St. Croix rods (I wish I could), so I've found that the high-end Fenwicks at about half the price are pretty darned nice for a farmboy.
Is there a difference? Yes, but I can afford twice as many good rods (and I don't cry nearly as loud if I break one).

Coach,
I personally have used Fenwick rods for almost 20 years. They have held up well in my charter business, and I highly recommend them to everyone. Good Fishing.

I use St.Croix avid 7'6" for jiggin! Use Fenwick techna a/v, G Loomis, and all star! The only rods i will ever buy again is St.Croix
Check out the Fenwick Techna series. I've used Loomis, St. Croix Avids, and Technas. All three are great rods, but the Techna is probably to most sentive one I've used. They have a different type of construction.

I've been a fenwick fan as long as I can remember. I still remember using my dad's fenglass rods growing up. More recently, I've used the Techna AV, and they are extremely sensitive. I also have some Co-fi and Ironfeather rods (which I don't think they make any more), and they are very good rods as well. Haven't tried the HMG-AV yet, but I hear it is between the Techna and the other rods I've used. I'll probably be getting one to try out this year. In short, all the Fenwicks I've owned have been great rods.

I've had a 7 foot MH tech av for the last two seasons and like it.
Also I have two older HMG's and they have been flawless.

I like the Fenwicks for steelhead, good bang for the buck, have not used any for walleye

I have a Fenwick HMG older model and I use it exclusively for jigging. I have fished where there was rocks with a soft bottom in between and I could most definately tell when I lifted and set down on a rock with the jig as apposed to setting the jig onto a softer bottom in between the rocks. I know this because after a few minutes of feeling the difference I put the camera down and confirmed the rocks were big and buried to there tops in sand. Very sensitive and a very good all around rod.

I have a number of Fenwicks but my favorite is my HMG model G959ML that I bought when they were $69. At 5'9" it is my jigging rod. Cant get that rod like it anymore except in some handle that I dont like. It started looking as bad as Willie Nelson's guitar and I had it redone. Have caught at least a thousand W's on it not to mention dozens of freight train Hybrid Wipers over the years.
There may be something better but I dont know what. John Estes

I will go against the grain here.
About 6 years ago I bought my last Fenwick rod, only to return it unused for a St. Croix. These were not HMG's but the next level down. I really liked the fast tip for live bait. Unfortunately I had a rod a year snap at the tip. Their guarantee was great, but it was always a hassle to bring them back. I felt that the tips where too thin and did not take normal abuse. Bought all St. Croix's and have only returned 1 for a reel seat issue since. The HMG's may very well have been substantially better. I do think the St. Croix's are as sensitive and more robust. Maybe I am just taking better care of my rods as I am paying more these days.
I would rate them pretty good. I've had one for 37 years, and I am still using it.

Lets put it all in perspective. If you had $225 to spend on a jigging rod what would it be?

Techna AV 6'6" ML

If you want to try a great rod, try the HMG/AV rod by Fenwick. This is a great rod and sells for about 129.

No reason to cry if a Fenwick rod breaks because they have an excellent replacement policy/warranty. I've used their rods for years and have had no problems.

Would you purchase a Fenwick jigging stick over a Loomis or St. Croix? Steve

Good Rods .. I troll matched pairs of Fenwick - Shimano - Quantum irons & like them equally .. never seen the reason to buy a high $$ rod, unless I wanted to hang it on the wall to look at :-)

Check out the Fenwick website. I don't think Cabelas carries the Techna. http://www.fenwickfishing.com/home.cfm

THANKS FREDDY,AND BY THE WAY FOR TROLLING CRANKS WOULD YOU CONSIDER THE T/A TO BE FENWICKS PREMIER ROD?

While I like the Techna and think it's a fantastic rod, I also believe the HMG AV is just as nice and a far better value. If you're trolling with your rods in a holder, HMG or HMX series will work just fine. You might also consider the Fenglass for trolling cranks, especially if you're using superlines. Good backbone, but a softer tip.

after looking at the price on the t/a i think you may be right about the value. i wouldnt like to spend 200 plus on a fishing rod. i have a hmg now and i love for jiggin and i think if i bought an hmg casting rod for trolling cranks it would work fine also. thanks again,i love fenwick rods!

I agree with the HMG959, it is a great jigging rod. Bought the same rod in the HMX, it isn't as sensitive because they painted the blank to make it look pretty. I highly recommend Fenwick. Broke my HMG on a 1lb bullhead flipping it into the boat, sent it in and had a new rod in less than a week, can't beat that service. Buy a Fenwick you won't go wrong for the money. I also own a GLoomis great rod but 2 - 3 times the money ( is it worth it )!!!!

Why spend that money on one rod when you could own two.

i have an older fenwick and when i inquired about replacement it kinda sounded like i would be paying for a re-placement rod. i would have to pay for shipping both ways and possible a nominal replacement fee. now this rod is a rod i have had for a while, and when it broke i was like, oh ##### and then never got around to sending it in. how does it usually go with sending them in? you know,$10 each way for shipping and a nominal replacement fee.....i could have 40 bucks into a $60 dollar rod! i might as well just go and buy new, dont you think?
