About a month ago I finally recieved my new Superdrive flat panel i Mac ( after a 2.5 month wait). I would think 90 % of the people on this board are on PC based computers. I will ask the question anyway. My problem is a very small one. If I am answering a post , and I am in the writting mode. I use to be able to go back one screen and re look at the whole thread then come back to my writting screen by moving to the next screen by the forward arrow and all what I started to write would be there. This I must add would be on my wifes Mac G4 with 700 + some MBs RAM. My new iMac has 512 MB RAM. On my Mac, if I do this looking back at the thread, I wipe out what I just wrote. I come back to a massage screen with nothing in it but my name and subject intact. I am running OS X and my wife is running OS 8.6 Any ideas??? I must add this iMac is so awsome! I have been having a blast burning DVD's and increased my music CD's ten fold. The LCD screen is so clear and bright and this is even coming off my wife's G4 with a 21 inch screen. LCD screens will spoil you, the quality of picture is excellent.

Tom, first of all, nice systems. I am a MAC man at heart but my job provides PC's. I consulted with my MAC expert and he says that it is probably due to OS X that you're running. Sorry I can't be of anymore help.

Tom, before you go back and look at the original thread, copy your reply into the computers memory. When you go back to your reply, paste the text into your message area. That should be a bandaid for the problem.

Not sure on your particular system, but I think it has to do with your internet settings:

Losing Information with the Back Button?
If your screen loses all your information whenever you try to go back to the page using the "Back" button, don't worry — this can be fixed.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer Users:
Find the settings for Temporary Internet Files (In IE 4.0, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Then click on Settings... under the section marked Temporary Internet Files). Make sure "Every visit to the page" is not checked. We recommend that you set it to "Every time you start Internet Explorer" as shown below for IE 4.0.
For Netscape users:
Go to the Edit menu in Netscape Navigator, and select Preferences. When the categories of Preferences appear, click on Advanced. Then click on Cache, under the Advanced section. You should see the following.
Make sure that neither the memory cache nor the disk cache is set to zero. We recommend that you set the memory cache to 1024 Kbytes and the disk cache to 7680 Kbytes. To do this, type 1024 in the box for the memory cache, and type 7680 in the disk cache. As a precautionary measure, clear your memory and disk caches by pressing the buttons "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear Disk Cache."

AquaMan, running IE 5.5. Mine is set on "Automatic". Never have a problem with back and forward buttons. Is there an advantage with your setting over "Automatic"?

I'm on AOL. I did try playing around with the preferences, but no luck. Saving it in memory looks like my last resort. Thanks for the tip! It must be OSX????
I have no trouble if I open the reply page in a different window. Then just click back and forth, or minimize the reply window to check on the post you are replying to.

Aaaah, AOL. I think that's were your problem is. Dump it. AOL is not a Internet SERVICE Provider. It is a Internet CONTENT Provider. It completely takes over your machine by making numerous changes in the registry asnd regulates what you see and were you go on the internet. Sign up with a regular ISP. There are plenty available and some are free and there are some with special prices for senior citizens.

Duh!, I figured a way to check it out. I have a partitioned HD with OS 9.2 separate from OSX. It works in OS 9 but not in OS X. So Eyedorktr tell your Mac guy he was right, it is a problem with OS X. Thanks for the help! Leo, I use Google and others to find my stuff. How could "they " control where I go?? And I thought I was bad with the conspiracy stuff. ;)

Tom,it has been my experience that a loit more 404 Error pages result when trying to navigate to various websites. I just think that a regular ISP is a better alternative than AOL.

Leo, A couple of years ago I would say, yes. But my wife who is a graphic designer is on all the time downloading files to customers has only a few problems a month, if even. I have never seen an error message in fact. AOL is running from Minneapolis to their main dist. center in Chicago on fiber optics. Since that switch about 1-2 years ago we have almost no problems anymore. AOL ownes a couple of the main cable companies in Minneapolis ( mine included) most are running fiber optics now. I get people telling me how bad AOL is and it is mostly from their experience from years ago and I mean years ago. Their billions have found there way to my telephone pole, and I'm running fine over here. NO complaints from me.( Is that possible??);)

Your right, Tom. My bad experience was about 5 years ago. I had just gotten a new laptop and installed AOL on it from one of those promotional CD-Roms with 100 hours of free online use. It wouldn't install the US version. Called tech support and they had no luck either. Finally got me online by routing me over AOL Canada. Was a big mess and I dumped it. Happy to hear yours is a success.

I did have a talk with a level 2 tech guy at Apple and he is pushing the problem that I am having on AOL software, which makes sense. Not that it is an excuse, but Apple changed the language or something changed that AOL had to rewite their whole software program for OS X. This happpened right when they were just finishing up on the first writting I guess. I would hate to be in that room when their boss said "scrap what you just worked on and start over!" I did call AOL and this one lady "kind'a" took down the problem. She said call back and we will have an answer for you in a couple of days. This was without taking my name or giving me a reference # that I asked for. I knew I was dealing with a block head so I left it go. I will call the Monday - Friday people instead of the Saturday people, I may get a better response. Leo, Yea, I kind'a thought that you had a bad time with AOL years ago. You sould take them up on their free 1000 hours and give them a try. Most of their system is on fiber optics now. I don't think you can say that about the other providers. The only thing is , is you pay for it, $ 5.00 + more a month. We were just going to change 1-2 years ago, but it was just like they flipped a switch, most of ALL the problems we were having went away over night. There were even a couple of times that I left myself on line (56k modem) all night and I was still on the next day. Old AOL would dump you off after 20 min. right in the middle of what you were doing, it was almost like it was in their program it was that bad.

I can't justify the $$$ right now, I'm to cheap. Even though it would be a write off with the wife business. If I where to go will anything, it would be cable modem. Some day AOL / Time Warner cable will give a package deal with are regular cable and cable modem combo that will change my mind. Until then it is sssssssssllllllooowwwwwwww 56k! They have DSL where I work. I do not know if it is fast DSL or slow DSL. That is blazing fast from what I am use to. Cable is suppose to top that.

I'm running OS 10.1.3/iMac with no problems - can't seem to duplicate your problem with ie5.1 or icab. The only AOL I have on is instant messenger. OSX is stable on my machine, and the more I learn it, the more I like it!
If you haven't already tried it, iCab is a browser that is much more stable and quicker that ie or netscape. It is free (macdownloads.com) and Walleye central works great on it.
Enjoy your iMac!

Chrism, I will download it later today if I can get the time. Thanks! I don't use IE or Netscape interfaces they are to slow on AOL .I just use straight AOL and have my favorites in my favorites icon and bingo I'm there. I know AOL uses Netscape based software that is why they bought them. Did I read your post right, you have AOL and when you write a reply to someones post and while you are in the message box you can go back to the thread that you are replying to by hitting the upper left arrow key. Then you can look at everyones reply to that post or re read the post you are replying to. Then you hit the "right"arrow key to get back into your message box. You then still have your message that you started?????? ( I don't) OS 9.2 I do still have the type there. Are you doing this in straight AOL 5.0 for OS X? Or in your sub program that you are using in AOL??? The above is in Walleye Central's board that I have found this problem so far.
