I am waiting for a nice St. Croix rod to arrive (long story) and I just found out I won't have it by the Minnesota opener.

So, I'm looking for a rod that could get me through opening weekend that would fall in the $25-$30 range. It would be mated with my Shimano Symetre or Stradic spinning reel for opening weekend and then bumped down to a Sidestab as a backup and "guest" rig after I get my St. Croix.

I'm thinking something "medium" in the 6'6" - 7' range - all purpose.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Shakespeare Intrepid or Sigma Titanium 7'0". Great rods...you won't be disappointed.

Try the Walmart Renegade brand. Don't know who makes it but I picked a couple on clearance this spring and I am very impressed. IM8 graphite, with some backbone. About $30.00.

I second the vote for a Lightning Rod. You will not find a better rod at that price.

A couple of my buddies used to use the lightning rod but have now switched to the Shakespeare (or other rod). The lightning is a bit mushy when it comes to casting, and setting the hook for that matter. The lightning is a staple product of Berkley's and they don't seem to think it needs improving, but the years are going by and the lightning rod is being left in the dust. ~$.02

I was at Gander Mtn. last night - and they have their Gander Mountain - rods on sale for $19 --
The normal price is $29.

Although they are a smidge heavy - If you pick up the 7' ml - you might not go back.

Take care

Have to agree with Roger, the Gander Mountain rods are on sale, and they are a great value for the dollar. I have one that I use for 3 way rigs, MH6'6" and it works super. My son-in-law uses a seven foot, med. action fast tip Gander rod, and seems to really like it. They make a great 9 foot light action dead stick that is great also. Check them out, you may like them as well as the St. Croix, or not??

I have used an Ugly stick a couple of times and they are great for the price. You should be able to get one for under 30 bucks and they offer a 5 year warranty if anything happens to it.

I can't see the whole reason in buying those nice expensive rods like St. Criox but to each their own. I think if I jigged much it would matter. I fish with two ugly sticks and love them. Strong as all get out and pretty sensistive and flexable while having a good deal of backbone. Haven't found a better rod for under $30.00 yet, and boy have I tried.

Go with the gander rods I have several and love them all. plus when you have a problem take them back to the store and walk out with a new one no questions asked. no shipping, no wait, no B.s.

I agree with Kevin. The UglyStiks are decent rods and very versatile. It will make a great back-up rod for emergency use or for your guests on the boat. You don't have to worry about them breaking it. Plenty of backbone and flexible tip for different types of fishing presentations. If I was going for the Lightning Rod, I would suggest the Pro Series. They are more expensive than you wanted but they are better rods than the regular Lightning Rods.

Hey, thanks to all.

I took the advice I received here and stopped in at GM on the way home last night. A couple of the suggestions listed here weren't in stock so that narrowed it down quite a bit. I picked up the GM rod on the sale. It will certainly be fine for opener and will make a handsome backup and guest rod after that. Chalk another one up to walleye central! I always get great tips and advice here.
