Hi, next weekend im going down the Rum River. Its around Andover wich is by Anoka,MN. Well, I guess my main question is what size weight to use for jigs going down the river?? I have 1/8 oz right now should thoose work fine?? I will be fishing large and smallmouth bass. Also I will be fishing walleyes of course. Any other suggestions on what to use for bait or anything else??
Use whatever it takes to get the jig to the bottom. 1/8 oz. is a common size, but it's unlikely it's enough to get you downstairs in any kind of current (depends on depth, of course).
Take a selection...1/8, 3/8, 1/4, 1/2, and even 3/4. Don't use a heavier jig than you need, but don't use less than you need, either.
The biggest mistake most river fishermen make is not using heavy enough jigs, IMO.

I fish the Wolf River alot, since I live only a quarter mile away from it. If your going to jig a river make sure you have lots of jigs and different sizes, my main river jig is 1/4 and 3/8 but there are alot of current breaks and these usually can handle a 1/8. A good rule of thumb is go as light as you can, but make sure you can feel bottom. Also learn to read curent. A easy tip that I use a lot is drop a empty plastic pop bottle and watch the line that it floats. The bottle will give you a acurate path to take along the curent break.
hope this helps

Way to go J bird! That's just what we need- more plastic pop lids littering the rivers!!!
