well, the nail knot is the most popular knot for this.

It is very hard to tie at first. There are tools that make it easier. This is the same knot often used to attach fly line to backing (if backing is used). With enough practice, you can learn to tie this by hand.

Cortland also makes braided loop connectors which go on the line like a chinese finger trap and are set by a heatshrink rubber piece. I've used these, but have had two fail on me. The second one to fail is probably the last one I'll use.

I've started using the following to form a loop in the end of my fly line:

It goes through the guides much more easily than a nail knot, and is far more reliable than the braided loop connectors. The down side is that you need the added tools to do it. As a fly tyer, I have the thread and bobbin so that isn't a problem for me.

Whichever knot I use, I use a loop to loop system to connect the leader.

You can nail knot a 4-5" section of heavy mono with a loop on the end to your fly line. Then loop to loop the leader to this. Or you can use the braided connectors or the whipped loop method. It makes changing and replacing leaders very easy. For attaching tippet to the leader (if needed), I also use a loop to loop connection. That makes changing tippets really easy and you don't go through leaders as fast. Use either the double surgeons loop or the perfection loop for creating loops in mono or flouro.
