View Full Version : Garmin Map76
Just purchased this unit and am really impressed but am used to using the track up in navigating. My unit seems to be locked in the north up mode. How do I get it to the track up mode? I can get the right screen, highlight north up,then click the rocker either to the right or left and nothing happens. Also is there a way to put icons in instead of waypoints? Having a little trouble figuring that one out to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

All this is explained in the manual. I don't have mine with me but I'll explain the best I can. For the track-up or north-up, once you get to that screen move the cursor to high-light the north-up, press menu or enter and the choices will pop up. For the symbols instead of wayoints, you need to select the waypoint. In the upper left hand part of the screen there is a small field with a darkend cirle in it. High-light this box and press menu or enter and the symbol window will pop up. Scroll down to select the symbol you want.

It's explained in detail in your owners manual
Sometimes manuals can be a bit hard to understand, and I've noticed that the Garmin manuals, which used to be among the very best out there, seem to be getting a bit harder to use with the newer models.
OK, here's what you do.
1. Turn it on.
2. When any operating screen finally appears hit the page key until the "Map" page appears.
3. Hit the "Menu" key.
4. A page will appear that has 4 entrys, the second of which is the screen orientation. Use your large center key to scroll down to the second block, the one marked "Orientation."
5. With the "Orientation" block highlighted hit your "Enter" key.
6. A drop down menu will appear with three choices; North Up, Track Up, and Course up. Using your large center key scroll to the one you prefer. Now, hit your "Enter" key.
That should lock the orientation selection and return you to the screen shown in step 4. Now hit your "Quit" key one time and it should return you to the Map page and normal operation of your GPS. You will now have to have satelites locked on and move just a couple of feet for the new setting to actually take effect.
I hope this helps.

I'm sorry, I left out a step. When you are at the "Map" page and you hit the "Menu" key it will not send you directly to the page that has the 4 options. It will send you to a page that has 6 options and the bottom one will be "Setup". You need to use the large center button to scroll down and highlight the "Setup" option and then hit your "Enter" button to get to the page that will allow you to select the Orientation. Please accept my appology for leaving the step out.

Thanks alot guys-you're the best. The manual does not tell it like it should . It sure is great to have a site like this and be able to help each other. Thanks again!
Hopefully someone can help me out on this icon issue. I have, with your help been able to figure out this other stuff but the manual in my opinion is very vague. How do I put an icon on this unit without making it a waypoint? Do they refer to them as symbols? I assume this can be done but how? I like to use icons to mark hazards and to also mark breaklines etc. Thanks Guys.
I have an expert who takes care of our Map76 (my 13-year old son), and I believe he told me that you can't just insert an icon to mark a point (hazard), it has to be a waypoint. I was recently at an electronics seminar at a fishing show, and I believe that the speaker (Bill Didriechson or something like that?) said that the same thing about the Garmin and Magellan units, and that is why he prefers Lowrance--they allow you to just mark something with a symbol without defining it as a waypoint.
I will check with my expert later to confirm this.
By the way, have you tried the new MapSource HotSpots version 4.0 download for LOTW? It has great lake detail!
Roy,
Actually that Lowrance is saving a waypoint, the only difference is that with the Lowrance its one that is then essentially lost to you other than as a map display. The only way Lowracne or any other GPS can hold an Icon for display on its screen is as a waypoint and why Lowrance would choose to disguise it is anyone's guess - but then it is Lowrance.
Anyway with the Garmin you mist give a name to a waypoint but it is not necessary that the name be displayed on the screen. You can save your favorite brushpile with the Icon of your choice and when you are on the Waypoint screen just click to uncheck the box that says "Display On Screen". If you do that only your Icon will show up and you will avoid screen clutter. Of course this gives you the advantage of now being able to use the GPS to navigate to that same brushpile, and most folks would find that somewhat valuable. I have no idea on earth why Lowrance would disguise its waypoints but, like I said, its a Lowrance so there's no telling.

I just bought this unit and also find it very hard to read this manual. I also bought the Mapsource for it and now find I can't use it on my computer because I have a MAC and it is not compatible. Bought it thru Cabela's and says nothing about compatibility in the description. So I guess the only thing to do is use a friends or get a new PC. Any other suggestions??

You can buy "virtual pc" software that will run on the mac. You can then run the mapsource software. Depending on the age of your mac you can may need to connect via a round plug (Mac's don't have serial connectors) or via a USB serial converter if your set up for USB. Garmin has a site that tells you how to wire to a round DIN plug if you need to do that. If your set up for USB, buying a serial converter would be the easiest route to go
