Fish Repellent

Every year for the past 3 years, some friends and myself enter the Treeland Resort Walleye Challenge in Hayward, Wisconsin. The "challenge" (appropriate name for this tourney) is on Mother's Day weekend, which we all know is May 12 this year! (right?) Getting to my point, this year, I would like to catch fish that when in the boat, won't be confused with my bait. In the past years, we have had luck fishing the submerged bogs in the bigger stretches of the lake. We usually use a simple jig and minnow or bottom-bouncer contraption. Or we have had fair results in Moss Creek with jigs and slip bobbers. As I said earlier, we usually manage to catch a couple registerable fish in the tournament, but I am hoping to learn more and do better this year. Last year some peole were using Nightcrawlers and catching fish, I was under the impression that that was WAY too early for Crawlers, obviously I was wrong....when is it O.K. to start using crawlers? It seems that most other anglers I see in the tournament are anchoring near quick drop-offs (in the 10-20ish ft. range)and then jig/slip-bobber fish. Is that recommended, because according to what I have been reading lately, shallower, warm water using jigs or Rapalas should work as well or better, correct? I do have a fair amount of walleye knowledge, but it seems that my knowledge isn't great enough to catch fish on the Chippewa Flowage. Any suggestions for the Fish Repellent would be greatly appreciated?

It's okay to start using crawlers as soon as you can get them. I have used crawlers with good success on the opener in Mn. The fish don't care that some people think you can't use crawlers till after Memorial Day.
