The best advise is to start simple. Get some fireball jigs in diffrent weights and use a stinger hook. The stinger will help gain confidence and you will land more fish. If the waters cold use some minnows and look for marks on the graph. No marks no fish then you fish for the marks giving each one a minute or so. As you get better start use plastic, whistlers, rattles, thumpers, etc....

After a while you will start using diffrent equipment and diffrent lines. Use what YOU like. Good rods make a lot of diffrence, use good fishing line.

Hope this helps.

The most basic way is vertical jigging. Tie a jig straight to your line, start out with a 1/4 oz. jig head, put a frozen minnow on it, and throw it overboard. Bounce it off the bottom and if there are fish there, you'll catch them.

Once you get the feel for it, you can lighten up the jig weight and start casting the jigs and bouncing (not dragging) them off the bottom.

Like the previous post stated, a high quality sensitive rod is nice to have and prefered by most, but not totally necessary.
